I'm not a Led guru by no means. But I've been replacing LEDs and power supplies for the life of my light. Now i would like to redo my old light. The plan is to get 4 heats sinks to hold 25 LEDs per and wire them into the old unit. It's a 48" unit and I'm placing it over a 6' tank. I like the function of the light but want to make the wires longer so I can spread the heatsinks evenly over the tank. It's tough to find heatsinks big enough to evenly space 25 LEDs. Also I'm seeing that most of the Cree LEDs are 5 watts. Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated.

You have lots of options. The Current DIY fixtures are about 1/3 the cost of the Solaris and about a 30-50% brighter.

Our Phoenix 25 May be perfect http://reefledlights.com/shop/diy_p25/

The standard heatsink in the Phoenix 25 is 8.46" x 12" and has 42 LED slots.

Given your options please feel free to give us a call.
