View Full Version : Just sharing my Tailspot Blenny
I have heard so many great things about these guys... and they are all true. Tailspot blenny's are just a great addition. They have too much personality.
They are the small "dogs" in my opinion.
So here's a shot of mine, and the pom pom crab.
Are tailspot's supposed to be herbivores? Because this guy eats mysis like a pig.

Most of the blennies that are sold as herbivores are basically varying degrees of omnivores. Some are more open to new ideas then others, but all of them have the potential to eat just about anything really.
In my experience, a lot of the algae eaters work this way. Even sea hares. These types of creatures basically eat algae, but they don't differentiate between what is algae and what is living in the algae, so they eat plenty of meaty food.

Mine prefers algae, but will eat small bits of mysis or pellets if offered and if there isn't much algae. They're pretty perfect for algae control. It eats pretty much any hair algae I've ever had an it eats leafy algae right down to the rock. Due to the way it devours the algae sheet I supplement it's diet with.
I was away for 3 months and had someone taking care of my tanks. To simplify feeding I just had them feed pellets twice a week and mysis once or twice a week (I prefer to have my "help" under feed) and when I got home his color was more muted. Regular feedings of algae have reversed this.
I've kept these in large tanks and nanos. They do well in groups or alone. They are pretty passive toward other tank mates but will stand their ground when provoked (I've had dottybacks pick fights, they have always ended as mutually accepting tank mates with no long term issues). They like to make homes in the small holes in live rock. After a short amount of time they have no fear if you when you walk up to the tank.

I love my tailspot, they are like dogs lol. Comes over to say hello when I come in & swims over once in a while to see what I'm doing.
Mine eats almost anything I put in the tank. I started feeding Rod's once a day for the pistol & goby, my tailspot goes nuts for that stuff. He's funny now that I increased flow in the tank, he'll go to a spot under one of the rocks & let the food come to him when he gets tired of chasing it.
They are very smart fish too. It has been 3 days and he keeps coming out to graze on the rocks.
