Hi good people, i'm absolutely drooling over a red corris wrasse at my local fish store and they are listed as reef safe with caution at some websites online. Well, i already have a melanurus wrasse that is also listed as reef safe with caution, that seems to be getting along well, except for my suspicion of his doing away with my two skunk cleaner shrimps. Anyway, i'm hoping someone here has had some experience with a red corris, and can advise me as to wether they are at least relatively safe to have around corals as well as other fish or not. Thanks very much!

Red Coris are beautiful Fish, but they get large AKA over a foot.
Tons of personality, personable, active, BUT as you've experienced,
they will eat your inverts, shrimp, and hermits are gone.
they appreciate a sand bed to sleep in, and any coral frags that arn't cemented or firmly attached will be tossed around in their search for food.
They flip frag plugs/discs over constantly. I think they do it just for fun.

They are beautiful when they get to full adult size, about a foot long. Mine was about8" when he died. beautiful colors.
I had no issues with mine as far as eating anything I didn't feed him.
BUT, they will move rocks and such around if they can. They are just looking for food, i.e. pods. They will burry themselves in the sand for a few days on occasion. But all in all a beautiful fish. Just keep them fed.
I've had a couple of them over the years.

These wrasses can be quite a nuisance in a reef setting, especially if you don't have everything nailed down pretty well. As others have said, they get big. Even a standard 180 gal. is probably on the small side, and they're best left for huge custom fish only tanks. With so may stunning reef safe wrasses available in the hobby, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for your next fish addition.

Mine used to sleep under the sand and I would worry it jumped. It didn't survive my move. Did I read correctly that you have a wrasse already? If so, what size tank do you have? Unless it is quite large, I would only have one wrasse in there.

Can I ask why? This is the first time I have heard this and with only having a 90 gal tank I keep 5 wrasse.

My guess is because it gets a foot long.

I have a melanarus and a Red coris both in a 125. They get along fine. The red coris even leaves my cleaner and harlequin shrimp alone so far but both shrimp are large and the coris is only about 5" now. That being said it WILL knock over anything not glued down. Mine can turn over rocks weighing 5 times its weight. I had to glue my red dome to a rock cause he would flip it when it was deflated and it is about 7" across when inflated. He can also flip my slipper coral at times.

+1 They will flip anything that's not nailed down. Had one - Tore down my tank to catch him. They grow fast!

Okay so he was just stating large wrasse then.

Yes. Wrasse are notorious for jumping and a larger wrasse will often chase smaller ones. I realize I didn't word my last statement correctly. I meant I wouldn't keep more than one unless there is not a huge difference in size or they are not both going to outgrow your tank.

Mine used to put sand everywhere. It looked just like yours. It did eat my cleaner shrimp, but I figured it might.
