Well I have had my 55 gallon set up for over 8 years now. I have learned a great deal about what works for me and what does not. Acrylic tanks do not work for me. I have always wanted to upgrade but the fact that my tank is splitting made it mandatory. My current setup is a 55 gallon acrylic (36x15x24) . For the record. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER ACRYLIC TANK!. I am upgrading to a 120 gallon rimless from Reef Savvy. The new tank will be 62x18x24. You can see from the photos that this will be a major rework. The cabinet where the current tank cannot support the new tank. I am also going to use some of the area in the closet directly behind the tank for some equipment. Here are some of the equipment highlights;

Reef Savvy 62 x 18 x 24 Rimlesss 3/4" Starphire front 3 sides blacked out
Pacific Sun 48" Metis Hyperion LED Lighting system
Pan World 50 return pump
Two MP 40 pumps
MRC Custom sump w/ refugium
Skimmer undecided
KALK reactor undecided
BRS GFO and Carbon reactors
Litre Miter water change system
RKE Controller

The rebuild starts in the garage. My current mix / fresh water tanks needed some upgrading. The tank on the left is the mixed saltwater and the right is the RODI.

I am estimating it will take me at least one to two months to complete the project and I will need a temporary home for my livestock. I have decided to go with the 100 gallon Rubbermaid farm tank. It will sit in my dining room on the floor. I want to acclimate the livestock to the new light so this will be a good time to play with the LED's and learn the software. First order of business is a mount for the light. I sketched up a simple solution and welded it up.

The light fired right up and I had it up and running via the Bluetooth connection. This is at 35% power!

when are you expecting delivery of the tank?

sseaner

It looks like about 30 days for the tank. Once the tank is shipped I will move the livestock and start tearing out. I am going to start work on the closet this week.

 I already do and will. Stared at those tupperware containers for a while before I could actually start taking stuff out. Bought my tank used and want to make it more automated and set it up the way I want next time. My canopy and lighting arrangement was horrible. Just had to take a step back to go forward. And newborn twins leave time for nothing, so now was as good as time as any.

And can't break them or worry with leaks. I want to use one for a sump next go around in another room. Easy maintenance ftw!

I use the 100g stock tank for my basement sump and its the best decision I made with regard to sump construction. Also have the 150g for my frag system. Love 'em.

sseaner, has the tank arrived from Reefsavvy yet? If so, can you post some pictures? And just one question, have you experienced any problems placing the skimmer directly into the stock tub? I will certainly be following this thread. This one is going to be fun to watch.

Tank should arrive any day. I will post some pics as soon as it does. The only thing I had to do was build an acrylic stand to put the skimmer on. That skimmer performs best in 9" of water and I have about 14"' in the temporary tank. I am also using a SEIO 1500 in the temporary tank for circulation.

Thanks for responding to my questions. Felix is building a rimless 125 gal. tank and stand for me which should be ready sometime in February or March. I'll also be using a 100 gal. stock tub when I make the transfer from my current 90 gal. Good to know that if I have to keep anything in the tub for longer than expected I can place a skimmer directly into the tub. Thanks again.

I worked most of the day on the closet. I want to get that part of the build finished up. I was going to paint the wood but ended up covering it with FRP. Now it will be totally waterproof. I added the front trim board which also creates a nice lip. All the seams were siliconed. I wired in my receptacles and added a light. The light works off a motion so it will turn on when you enter the closet. I mounted the RKE power strips and the BRS reactors.

I am going for a more open look this time with a larger sand bed for a clam or two. The tape on the table represents the tank dimensions. The large rock in the center will just break the surface of the water. I am hoping a crab a two will hang out on top. It should look neat since the tank is rimless.

The 4x8 brown sheet you see in the back round is 3/8 acrylic for the sump build.

I did complete fresh water test and ran the system for a full day with no problems. The water was drained and rocks rinsed one last time. The rocks are all Marco and the sand is Tropic Eden Reef flakes. The sand was rinsed and added. The system was filled with new RODI salt water and the cycle started. I added Fritz 900 turbo, and two shrimp. In the refugium I added some live rock from my temporary aquarium and a scoop of the live sand. The light is a 4 foot Pacific Sun LED Metis Hyperion. It is over my temporary tank right now and will be moved when the cycle is complete.

Nice helicopter! I bucked about 20k rivets helping my dad build a RV-6a 20+ years ago. That was enough for me. Particularly with the ringing I have in my ears from laying inside an all metal fuselage holding a bucking bar while the its being nailed by the air hammer. Not the most brilliant of actions.

Ok....Back to reefing. I finished up the closet which is directly behind my tank. I wanted to keep all of the electrical components out of the salt environment. This section as well as the sump section have a water sensor that is linked to the DA controller.

The top off system starts in the garage with the 65 gallon RODI tank. It has a float valve for auto filling. A 1/4" line runs from the garage to the closet

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/8474802088/" title="Untitled by scott.seaners, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8370/8474802088_7002202f4e.jpg" width="374" height="500" alt="Untitled"></a>

The white line at the top fills the container and there is a line plumbed at the bottom of the tank which runs to the closet. There are no pumps involved. I am using the pressure from the 65 gallon tank to top off.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/8597025909/" title="Untitled by scott.seaners, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8107/8597025909_d589efaefb.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Untitled"></a>

The Blue line is from the garage tank. It passes through solenoid one and two and then enters the kalk reactor and then into the tank. I have a double float switch in the sump which is tied into the DA controller. They are wired in series so if the first one fails the second one will catch it.

Here is a FTS. I am getting tired of watching water circulate so I guess it is time to finish the front cabinets. My skimmer will be here on Monday or Tuesday. It is a Bashsea Twisted Skimmer. Steve at Bashsea worked with me to customize it for my height requirements. I am looking forward to installing it. It will be powered by an Ehiem 5000. The cycle seems to be proceeding as expected.

hey i noticed that you're using the float switch setup where it's on a single bracket. are you worried about the difference in height of those float switches? Isn't it like a 2-3 inch difference?

sseaner
03/29/2013, 03:02 PM
They are actually redundant switches. The lower one is the primary switch and the upper is the secondary(backup). The primary is the one that is controlling the daily top off. If it were to fail and the system continued to fill, the secondary switch would activate turning off the top off water. If you look into the sump and see the first switch under water and the water level is at the second switch, you would know the primary failed and needs replacement.

Don, If I could sell it to the wife I would do it!

sseaner
06/03/2013, 04:12 PM
Lindsey, there is some leak protection built in. The interior of the closet compartment has a 4" lip and the entire are is covered with FRP and the seams are siliconed. There is a water sensor (small white square next to kalk reactor) in the closet as well as the sump area. They are tied to the controller and message me if there is any tank alarm including water on the deck. I can then pull up a web cam and inspect both areas (so I can instruct the wife or neighbor on what to do). I calculated the closet and sump can hold several gallons of water. In the future I am going to add solenoid valve that will close if an alarm is received and isolate the closet. I am also toying with the idea of a pump that would push the water back into the sump before it would get too high.

Well I received my new Life Reef Skimmer. All I can say is wow. If you have never had any experience with their products, you really need to check them out. The packing for shipment has to be the best I have ever received.

<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/13487941963/player/8085cd7a55" height="375" width="500" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

One of the nice things is that everything is included to get the skimmer up and running. I mean everything including silicone grease, Teflon tape, extra O rings and thumb screws.

<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/13487943913/player/10fa5cca73" height="375" width="500" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

The build quality is second to none. This thing is built like a tank. I removed my old skimmer and took the opportunity to clean the sump.
I also had a leaking bulkhead that had cracked. I was able to use epoxy putty to stop the leak while I ordered a new piece. I used this time to swap that part out.

<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/13488203714/player/fecaa1eb23" height="375" width="500" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

The skimmer went in easily. I have limited clearance so I worked with Jeff on the measurements. It Fits! Life Reefs customer service is awesome. I went with the Mag 9.5 pump.

<iframe src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/92897605@N07/13487841285/player/8fa119e841" height="375" width="500" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen oallowfullscreen msallowfullscreen></iframe>

I have had lots of skimmers. I have never had one make this may bubbles in addition to being dead silent. I have ZERO micro bubbles!

Here is a not so great FTS. I am using a new camera and have yet to figure it out. I will post updates as the skimmer breaks in and starts to skim.

Gorgeous work, and a build to envy. One question, and this seems like the most mundane detail, but how did you mount your RK head unit to the wall? Looks so clean! LOL! I will be doing the same this weekend;)

I cant reveal that secret...............:lmao: I just used thin double sided tape. I made a small hole in the wall just big enough to accommodate the bus cord. Just two small pieces so if I do need to remove it I can. Thanks for the compliments.

Great skimmer choice! I had one since 94. You will love how low maintence it is.

That is one of the primary reasons I elected to go with Life Reef. I was tired of jacking with my skimmer and cleaning it. Can't wait to grab one of Jeff's CA reactors.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I have found lots of ideas from Reef Central. I also learned a lot from my previous setup (plenty of how NOT to do it!). The biggest thing I learned is that I will never own another ACRYLIC TANK!

Sean, It's all looking good. The skimmer is a beast. Really like the mangroves in the sump/fuge. The display looks excellent.

Well I have been having a reef tank since 2004 and have never taken the time to learn how to take nice photos of the tank. I have an older Canon D20 sitting in the closet so I broke it out and will try to update the tank with quality pictures. Any hints or tips will be greatly appreciated.

When I upgraded last year I added a pinnacle in the live rock that broke the surface of the water. I wanted something to live out of the water and I found the perfect candidate. It is a red fiddler crab. The small red crab lives out of the water the majority of the time. He will venture under water to feed on waste and algae on the rocks. One of my favorite additions so far. You can also see some of the hermits make it all the way to the top.

Yes, Jeff at Life Reef makes some nice gear. I am looking hard at his LCR1. I do not have a large number of corals in my tank but the Kalk reactor is not keeping up with the CA/Alk even though I perform 1.5 GPD water changes. I plan on adding more SPS and I do have plenty of coralline. If I pull the trigger on the LCR1, I am contemplating adding some Zeomag on top the coarse media to handle the mag requirements.

Life Reef SKIMMER UPDATE........The skimmer is really starting produce. I am going to open the valve slightly to get a drier skimmate. My observations are that this is the quietest skimmer I have ever owned. There is no air or sucking sound. The Mag 9.5 pump is silent, powerful, and has not added any additional heat to the tank. My previous skimmer pump was an Eheim 5000. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I LOVE this project!! The closet idea AND the way you executed it is fantastic!
I'll definitely keep this idea in my memory bank for the future.

Tank is looking marvelous as well, very nice work all around!

This build makes me happy, haha.

Thanks guys........Well the Ca reactor arrived. As usual it was packed extremely well. I have read good reviews on the TLF's Reborn media so I am going to give it a try. I am also adding about 5% of Zeomag on top of the Reborn to help keep the Mag parameters up.

I finally have the CA reactor up and running. It is DEAD silient. I have the effluent at 6.4 ph. I will monitor the parameters and adjust them from there. I am running some Zeomag in the top of the reactor for magnesium. You can see the small white pellets above the Reborn media. I used a Vertex magnetic line holder to hold the effluent line in the sump. Here are some more pics.

It appears I have the CA reactor dialed in for now. Running the reactor at 6.43 PH, bubble count 40/pm and dripping about 50 ml/m of effluent. Alk is holding at 8.7, CA is at 430 and the MAg is at 1400. All the inhabitants seem happy. Ill leave it alone for a while and keep testing. FYI I am using the TLF Reborn media along with some Zeomag.

Nice set up. Life Reef is the best. I have his sump and protein skimmer and they are perfect. I currently have his calcium reactor on order. I can't wait. Can't stand the constant adjustments on my current one.

Not too much going on with the tank. I had a return pump failure while I was out of town which was a small disaster. I lost some corals and fish but I only have myself to blame for going cheap (Panworld) JUNK! I upgraded to the Iwaki 55 and also the new Maxspect gyre. I want to simplify the system so I am removing Two Tunze 6055's and my CA reactor pump. I am running the reactor off the Iwaki. Between the increased return and the Maxspect I have more than enough flow with less pumps to maintain. I will talk more about the Maxspect and the system changes in an upcoming post. Here is a quick FTS. The jury is still out but LED lighting with SPS so far for me has been a bust. I love the Reef Savvy tank. You cannot beat their quality.
