What size and flavor we talking? Seriously. Frozen ok or from the deli section?

you want to use a raw shrimp, doesnt matter if its frozen, it will thaw pretty quick anyway. take the shell off and no head.

and put it in a little nylon bag (pantyhose work great) that way its easier to take out when it starts to turn to soup

+1 I did this too. A filter/mesh sock or media bag would work as well.

+2 I also use the media bag method. I tie a piece of fishing line to it as well , make removal easier.

I still prefer pure ammonia available at any drug store. Less rotting corpse smell and a few days faster to start the cycle.

I've always used the "ghost feed" method with flake food. It accomplished the same result, but less worry about preservatives in the shrimp.

This is how I cycled my tank as well. I used this site (http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_51/fishless-cycling-article.htm) to figure out exactly how to much use. Then I just did about an 80% water change before I added in anything and it worked great for me.
