What is the importance of chlorinity in our reef tanks and why do we not test for it?

Chloride is the most abundant ion in seawater by a huge margin. We don't test it because there's always plenty of it. I don't know that you're going to throw it out too bad without doing something drastic. I think some folks manage their two part systems to balance chloride with sulfate additions but it is such a huge part of what is there compared to things we do test like calcium.

It is possible to throw it out, but you need to be a large 2 part user, and not be keeping up with water changes to do it. Balling and Balling light systems both require you, as part of the cook book, to remove some salty water to keep it under control.

You can get test kits for it, but not many people need them.
