Ive had a new green star polyp in my tank for about 10 days now. Its been perfect ever since day one, i bought it from my LFS, brought it home and in the tank it went. All my water params are great other than my calcium is a little low and im in the process of raising it. My calcium was a 280 at first day and now im up to a 360. Even with the lower than ideal calc it has come out and FULLY extended all polyps ever since day 1. My Zoas and mushrooms are still doing perfect and opening during lighted hours.

Today my GSP has not opened at all. Not even 1 tentacle. Any idea what may be going on? I havent moved the location. I did add three fish int he last few days (clown, firefish, diamond watchman goby) but none of them are messing with it or around it. The GSP doesnt appear to be bleching or dieing off, thoughts?

Helpfull info

55 gall
2 Hydor 750 powerheads
HOB filter

Nits - 0
Nitrates - 20
Alk - 9
Calc - 360
Gravity - 1.022
Ammonia - 0
Temp - 78 - 79

I also did a 10 gallon water change today (was scheduled before GSP wouldnt open) so i have a fresh wtaer change with water always bought from LFS.

Thanks

They close up sometimes and can stay that way for a few days. If you haven't moved it since putting it in, then it just may be closing up for a little bit. mine do this on occasion i wouldn't worry about it yet

GSP can be temperamental and not open for no apparent reason. Then one day they decide to open again.

I wouldn't worry about it, this behavior is 100% normal for a GSP.

my GSP closed for a few days and after that they exploded with growth. Love this coral

Thanks for the reassurance, ill keep an eye on them and continue to raise my calc.

Thats one heck of a gsp growth!!

I would raise your specific gravity a tad to the 1.023 - 1.024 range which will also help with the calcium level a little. I'm sure soon enough you will be cursing the rate at which that stuff grows if it's in a difficult spot to keep trimmed down lol

i too would raise your SG up to at least 1.024, i keep mine at 1.026 (35ppt) but i think .022 is too low.

but rest assured that parameter has little to do with GSP closing, i have had it close up for a week or two, then it quadruples in size in a couple days after opening again...the stuff is weird, but i do love the way it flows...

as mentioned keep it isolated and easily accessible, it is very weed like, kinda like crab grass, once rooted it takes over...fortunately it is a lot easier to get rid of then crab grass.

Im using a hydrometer to measure SG and ive read before that they can measure off by .002. My lfs makes my water im inclined to believe im closer to 1.024 bc its the water they use and they have a massive coral selection.

I really need to invest in a refractometer.

But i have the gsp on its own rock and an easy way to trim it from spreading to another. I really like the way the gsp flows in the water, maybe mines getting rdy to explode? :)

Mine did the exact same thing on Saturday and opened back up today. That was after my water change on Friday however. I know they can be tempermental

Not to worry, they tend to do that like everyone is saying. I agree, raise you SG to 024

My white star polyps did the same thing. Closed for about 2 weeks, then decided to overun a piece of LR in my tank. If you start seeing the rubbery base dying off or discoloring, then you have a problem.

I didn't notice your SG being so low. I would also get that SG up closer to natural seawater levels.

my SG is 1.025. I took it to my LFS to test.

+1 for not using a hydrometer mine is measuring off by .003.

Im measuring 1.022 with hydrometer. At least i know the discrep now.

Ok so i am getting die off on the gsp now, i have coral rx if i should dip it? Is it time to move it? Looking for suggestions, my sg is 1.025 and my calc is now 380.

All other coral in tank is fine
