I use a 55g as my sump/fuge where I have a few macro's growing. I'm using a 2 bulb T5NO fixture with 6700k bulbs. Since my 55 is a sump/fuge its not filled to the top I'd go with 2 T5HO's with 5500k to 7000k range bulbs with a full 55g tank. You could also do cheap socket fixtures using the spiral CFL bulbs but if its a display tank it'll look kind of ugly unless you have a hood.

4-6 39w T5s ...

MacroAlgae thrives under a quality mix of T5s

No worries, 6 x 39w is unnecessary unless youre intending to keep Seagrasses i.e. Halodule beaudettei/wrightii and/or Thalassia testudinum

I am guessing this is going to be a display tank. so I would think about a DIY LED setup.
pretty easy to make, low cost of running and controllable. + there pretty sick looking to .

It is worth noting that, like corals, not all macros/plants require the same amount of lighting.
