I have 4 media baskets. I'm on day 16 of my cycle.
In two of my baskets, I have the original 3 stage filter media (mechanical, carbon, phosphate sponges). Each media pack is $20. They recommend replacing the sponges every month, so that would be $40 per month for changing them.
In the other two media baskets, I have yellow mechanicals sponge on top. In the other two chambers for one of them, I have rock rubble. In the other one I have Seachem bio-media.
That being said, what happened to the idea of rinsing out filter media in RO/DI water and re-using it to keep the bacteria built on it in the tank?
Which sponges really need to be replaced every month? Any of them? Some of them?
If carbon needed to be switched out, wouldn't it be cheaper to buy some carbon sponges and cut them to fit?
Should I quit using them all together? I have 35 lbs. of rock (10% live, 90% dry) in a 38 gallon tank.
What is filter floss? I've seen it in a package, but not outside of one. Is it basically like a mechanical filter?
