The mesh is geared basically just for either holding media, such as carbon, or capturing large debree from going into your sump, such as macro/bubble algae or hermit crabs or small fish that make it through your overflow. It is not for clearing and filtering the water of fine particles, sand/silt, etc. To clear and filter the water you need felt filter socks. As to 100 vs 200, not a big difference in my opinion. Obviously 100 captures finer particles/silt. But it also clogs up faster and has a slightly slower water flow through. Which to use depends on your system and needs. Bare bottom tank owners might prefer 100 for crystal clear water, with less sand/silt to clog it to start with. As a DSB tank owner, there is too much fine particles in the water stream that would cause a 100 to clog too fast for me. I use two 200 felt socks, one after the overflow and one to capture the skimmer output (which is also fed via gravity feed from my overflow).

Also, there is a difference in quality of different brand felt socks. Some are thicker material than others. I prefer the thicker socks.

I also use 200 micron felt, but the next time I buy socks I will probably go with a smaller filtering size. I change my socks every 1-2 days to minimize the amount of decay that enters the tank from the socks, so it will not change my routine and will provide additional filtering.

Thanks all, looks like felt is the way I need to go, and probably 200.

Like 100. Always amazed at the amount of junk it pulls out after only two days. You have to be disciplined about changing them. I think it allows me to feed a bit heavier.

I use 200 micron felt, but thinking of trying out mesh. The felt does do a really good job polishing the water but I have to change mine about every 2 days

I have a total of 3 filter socks in my sump and I use a mix of felt and mesh and I have sand in DT but not a dsb.....overall I think I would like to just use felt over mesh.....polishes water better and traps more gunk......so I think that u would be better served using 200 micron felt .........get a few so that u can easily change them out.....when u have collected a couple of dirty ones--wash them
