View Full Version : What size pump ? From Basement?

I need to move RO/DI water from my basement to The first floor. If I drill a Hole behind my tank I will need about 25- 30 foot of hose. How big of a pump would you recommend? And what size tubing? Thanks for any help. I do not want to keep carrying 5 gallon buckets upstairs to do water changes..

On these pumps if it says the max head is 374 gph at 12 ft. What exactly does that mean? Can I get half of the 374 at 24ft?

Not exactly; you can sorta/kinda think of "Head" as the downward/back pressure pressure (water weight/gravity + air pressure) exerted on a given cylinder of water (or whatever)... its more sorta calculus/rate change thing, not a simple ratio per se

also there is in fact sorta a ideal diameter for a given water volume with a given pump (friction/diameter)... in otherwords; depending on your desired rate & volume & pressure & pipe length in conjunction with the "horsepower" of your pump, the "ideal" pipe diameter might vary between 1/2" and 1.25" for most applications....


short version: Roughly from the basement I'd say a Mag 9.5 or Quiet one 4000HH would push up enough water fast enough for you (using either 3/4" PVC or 5/8" I.D clear vinyl )

...maybe even get away with a Rio 2100 or equiv using 3/8" I.D vinyl ....

I'm sure someone else has a working setup to offer ...

What is the height the pump needs to be able to pump? I'm thinking that is what's gonna help you decide which pump.

Approx. 12 ft High 25-30 ft total. It does not have to be fast as long as it gets the job done. As it will be going from one brute 32 gallon to another next to the tank.

So for example >. If the max head on a pump is 10ft at 900GPH . And I hooked that pump up The water would stop flowing at 10 ft. It would not go 2 ft further at a reduced rate?

Yes, it will go further at a reduced rate.

Thats what I thought. But they told me at The fish store I talked to that the water would stop dead at 10ft if that is the recommended head.

You can throttle back a pump with a valve: i have a basement sump and use an overpowered Iwaki 100 (2000 gph) with a similar run. I THINK that an Iwaki 70 would have done it (1500 gph). I know a mag 12 (1200 gph) didn't cut it...but the 100 would blast water clear out of the tank if I didn't throttle it down. If you can possibly go with an Iwaki (Japanese motor, attach your own plug) do: they're practically indestructible: cast-metal impeller, impeller alone weighs at least a pound, decouples if stressed, instead of burning out; easy service, remove problem, reattach cover, restart pump---worth every penny. The Iwaki's are external, not submersible. Bulkhead them on, save sump space.

Another piece of advice: have a cutoff valve between pump and bulkhead, have a screw cap handy for interior bulkhead, and have a cutoff valve on the return line, which can be used to fine-tune the flow.

A pump does not suffer from being throttled back: it only 'thinks' it's pumping further.

If a pump has a max flow rate of 900gph and a max head rating of 10' it will pump 900gph at zero head and pump at a reduced rate the higher you go until you reach 10' then it will no longer pump.

My understanding is that max head is the maximum height that the pump can pump liquid. So over 10' and it will not pump.
