View Full Version : Creative way to keep jumpers in? In Wall Tank

There's gotta be some creative ways that others have done this. My tank is an in wall, and I need a way to keep jumpers in the tank that won't sacrifice Par (don't wanna lay screens down if I don't have to), and easy to remove when I need to get into the tank for maintenance, feeding, scaping, etc...

Right now, I'm considering a screen "fence" that will run around the perimeter of the trim and extend 24" (is that tall enough?) tall and attach to trim via magnets. I'll simply just superglue some rubberized industrial magnets around the trim.

I'm sure there are better suggestions out there. What are you guys doing with your In Wall tanks to keep jumpers in?

Thx

I'm running the garden netting. I hadn't seen anything showing it cuts down on PAR significantly.

garden netting is superior to eggcrate IMO

I have used the clear screen netting that you can get at bulkreefsupply.com

You can get the frame material at any lowes or home depot and it is very easy to put together, and it can just lay on top without the use of magnets.

Yeah, I'm really trying to avoid laying something across the top if I don't have to

if there's an easier way to keep fish in AND gain access to the aquarium I'd like to hear about it too.......

If you are happy with your device, then to heck with the rest of us and what we think. :)

It's very considerate to leave them room to jump while still making sure they land in the tank.

I prolly would have just used sheets on the "egg crate" stuff they sell for florescent light fixtures. I think it 2 feet by 4 feet and easy to cut. All of the light will make it through too. Very light for lifting and even though the spaces are 1/2 square, it would be very tuff any fish to make it through. Unless they have thumbs.

I've had fish jump through egg rate. :(
Plus, yes it does sacrifice par unfortunately.

Hale, what was your reason s for not wanting netting across the top
Was it purely sacrificing the par??

Egg create blocks a good 30% of available light, I was amazed when I switched it out for mesh screens! I first used .5" mesh and had a Purple Tilefish make it through to his death. Switched all frames to .25" mesh and still no noticeable light blockage. I use the picture frame Velcro (Strong and water proof) to keep the screen panels secure for the more powerful jumpers.

I spend a lot of time and money keeping my creatures alive and healthy and losing another to jumping is not going to happen again!
We owe it to our fish!

Yes. Interfering with my lighting is exactly my issue. We pay a lot of money for our lighting systems, so sacrificing the efficiency just didn't seem, well... efficient.
I was hoping that there would be some good creative feedback on other ways to prevent jumpers instead of the standard screen or mesh across the top.
Who knows, maybe I'll start a trend with my vertical fence idea. I'm sure that there are a ton of other ideas out there that just haven't seen this thread. Otherwise, I'm very happy with my fence for now.

I like it,I had the same idea but to use the egg crate for a fence around the top of my tank,I like that with the screen, there's no way a fish can get through it,now I have a new idea to consider, thanks for sharing :D

That looks great! It should definatly work or you could train high jumpers for the olympics. Very nice setup. Your fish room looks great.

Yes, looks nice... You could keep birds in there too! :-)

I have the 1/4" garden mesh stuff on my tank and I have had 5 yes 5 fire fish jump through it. Works awesome for everything else though.

What you have is actually the most effective way to keep fish in the tank but it gets in the way more when you need to get in the tank.

I have/had the BRS screen across the back of my canopy for about two years and it is starting to fall apart! I have to replace it all now I guess, the last time I had to move something I touched it and could not believe how brittle it got? I'm running 250 radiums, and they have no direct light on them?

...but it gets in the way more when you need to get in the tank.

That's why I chose to go with magnets. It simply clicks on an off very simply. Very easy to remove when I want to get into the tank, and very easy to replace when I'm done.
We'll see. I'll give it a shot for a few months and see how I like it.
