I'm considering having a metal stand made for my 40B that will have the (current) dimensions of 36"L x 18"W x 44"H. I plan on having a second level within the stand itself so I can support a 20L fuge-sump system (with skimmer) along with an area for an ATO, GFO, and Carbon reactor.

Does anyone have a rough idea on the costs for something like this? I'm guessing the standard is 1.5" square tubing with 1/4" thickness. Is that too strong or weak? I also plan on skinning this but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I guess I just screw directly into the tubing?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I would say maybe $150-200

I had a 7 foot long 2 feet tall stand and canopy made for a 265 tank and it was about $850.00

44" sounds pretty high, that should put the top rim of your tank at 6ft. whch may cause issues with maintenance. Are you planning a canopy for it?

The person building it would or should be able to tell you what is needed to support the weight of the tank. I estimate my 40B at around 600lb, but to play it safe I would personally build to hold 1000lbs. You also want to make sure the stand isn't built on feet to hlep distribute the weight over a big space on your floor.

Yeah, it should actually top off at 60" or 5'. I'm going to have an open top with a mesh screen. However, it seems that the cost of the stand is going to be pretty expensive, based on the other responses I've received.

Mine is 36" tall just the stand and I wish i went taller. 40" would be great for me.

Materials along are expensive, even from a real steelyard. I just picked up a 20' length of 2"x3/16" square tubing and the steel was well over $100. The cost of steel, plus a few hours of cutting and welding... It adds up quickly.

I know it wouldn't be your exact dimensions but I saw Petco had metal stands for the 40B. I have one under my 55 and it's alright, nothing special.

I have a Petco stand under my 29g and the 10g sump fits perfectly under it. I have the Manhattan stand but they have this one on sale for 59.99 with free shipping. http://www.petco.com/product/119923/Petco-Brooklyn-Metal-Tank-Stand.aspx?CoreCat=MM_FishSupplies_StandsFurniture
