View Full Version : Effects of Dying Sponges?

Just curious... as I keep an eye on my tree sponges, ball sponges, etc from TBS, what effect would a dying sponge have on water chemistry? If you see one where the outer flesh is disappearing, revealing the sponge structure beneath, do you pull it out immediately, try cutting off the bad sections, leave it and hope for the best? Does this decay contribute to nitrates or anything else?

Some species of sponge contain a lot of toxins that might be released upon death. I'd probably be cautious and cut away parts as they start to go downhill. If the sponge is large enough and died quickly enough, it might cause an ammonia spike, which is another concern.
