First time having a sump. Here are my specifics

1. 30 Gallon Deep Blue Reef Ready Tank
2. 1 inch drain
3. 3/4 inch return
4. 20 X 18 inch sump with 9 inches of water in it (not sure of gallons)
5. Tunze Silence T 1073.02 return pump rated at 635 gallons per hour
6. I have a ball valve on the return line and am running it wide open

While my sump and tank appear to be running at constant water levels, there appears to be very little flow in the sump itself. If I look at the surface of the water in the sump, it appears stagnant.

Is this an indication that I need a larger pump to cause more water flow?

Appreciate the help!

If the water level in the sump and tank are constant, then flow is fine. There is nothing for you to do except enjoy your tank.

I am not an expert but i think high flow through most sumps is over rated. Get some good power heads to move water in your display tank that use very little electricity. Then move less water from you sump to your display. Pushing all that water up hill takes alot of power.
