View Full Version : One MP40 for 75 Gallon?

Was wondering if I could get by running one MP40 on a 75 gallon tank for a while until I can afford two?

Don't have any experience with these pumps so I thought I would ask.

Currently running two Tunze 6100's on a controller and they come on one at a time. I also have two nano streams that come on (plan to keep these) to help randomize flow every couple of hours.

Plan on selling the Tunze's and their controller and replacing with 2 MP40's but can't swing both of them at once.

I tried to get away with 1 MP40 in my 75 but ended up adding an MP10 for the other side.

This is for an SPS dominated tank so it really depends on what you plan to keep.

I would agree try this http://ecotechmarine.com/calculator/

Owning a vortech...I personally would suggest sticking with Tunze with a controller instead...they are just plain quieter. The vortech offers nice options though...and so does the new Tunze pumps and controllers.

I find my older tunzes don't really push enough water to keep the detritus up and they take up A LOT of room in my small 75 Gallon. I think if the tank were larger the Tunzes would work better. That probably sounds weird but I find the flow area kinda narrow but feel if the tank were larger than the flow would widen and work better.

Thanks for the calculator will check it.

I get a lot of detritus that doesn't stay suspended and I have 4 pumps on there. 2 large 6100's and two nano 6045's that blow across the bottom a couple of times per hour.

Update:
Just checked that calculator and it looks like one will fit the bill. Keeping the Nano streams to help with additional flow and will add another MP40 whenever possible. Anyone want to buy some Tunze 6100's? :)

I have the same set up - 1 mp10 and 1 mp40. You can get away with 1 set up make sure your return pump is pushing the opposite direction. I use reef crest mode which changes things up as far as flow. Highly recommend Vortechs they move water like no other and y sps are brighter than ever.

today's Tunze offers wide flow options... I was thinking new Tunze 6105 vs the mp 40... depending on rock work the MP40 will or will not be enough flow. Your idea of just adding one of the additional powerheads you have is a good idea(if needed).

I run one MP40 on mine. I have mostly LPS/softies, some RBTA's, and all is well. I have my return pointed in the general direction of the MP40 to create some turbulence.

That all said, I think an ideal setup would be an MP40 and a Tunze nano wavebox.

The noise with an MP40 is minimal in my setup. The only time I hear it is if I run it on a wave function, which I never do. If I'm right next to it I can hear it, or if in the same room and concentrate I can hear it. It's not like it's a vacuum cleaner, not even a dustbuster.

Are you sure your 6100's aren't running the pucks from a 6000? The difference in flow is significant. If the puck is marked as a 7210 it is a 6000, if it is marked 7410 it is a 6100. The pump is the same, but the flow is determined by the puck (transformer) The 6000 pushes 1850 gph and the 6100 pushes 3170 gph.

I run one MP40 in my 75 and supplement with two 1200 Maxijets with Hydor rotating flow deflectors. Somehow it seemed a lot easier to talk myself into buying the first MP40, then into sinking another $465 for a second one.

Positive I originally bought them as 6000's and then upgraded them to 6100's. :)

The Tunze setup I have cost me over $1000. They are nice but take up a lot of room and don't create the undertow that I have seen achieved with the ecotech's. If I turn the pumps up too much the corals can't take it and if I turn them down the detritus settles (in places that I can never get to of course).

i run 1 mp40 (with sps) on my 80 gal. no other pump just my return nozzle.

You won't gain much in overall flow with two but it will be much broader. There is no reason why one won't work until you get the second. You will be cutting the flow in half for a while so keep that in mind.

I was thinking that with one I would turn it up much higher than I would if I were running two. At any rate it will be some time before I can purchase another. Being poor sucks.

At max the MP40 only pushes 3200 gph, and you currently have over 6200 gph combined. It's a tough decision.

I see your point but I only run them one at a time and hardly ever turn them up over halfway. Every now and again I switch up the flow and run two at once.

Mr. Roboto. Nice. :) Now I am off to my iTunes library to crank up some STYX. Mr. Roboto is spinning as I type.

You probably won't see much difference with the way you run them. I don't see a downside as far as flow goes, and if you decide you don't like the sound of the MP, you won't lose much money selling it.

That is exactly what I was thinking. I don't think the noise will bother me too much and I much prefer the cleaner look of the ecotech compared to the Tunze.

Don't forget all the possibilities when you have more than one vortech. There's the Eco-Smart thing, the sync and anti-sync, tidal swell mode, wireless master and slave modes.

But then again Tunze has the new 6095 and also PC programmable multi-controller.
