Here's my question. Has anyone created new saltwater filled the tank with no live rock or sand and corals done well? My goal was to get a 40 gallon flat with sump with filter socks and skimmer. Goal was to just do sps. Dosing will be done with two part with brs dosing pumps.

Without substrate, live rock, etc... You would need to do some serious filtering to ensure water quality. All that rock and sand is biological filtration. Without it ammonia will quickly build up and kill your corals.

You need some kind of filtration. Bio balls ,rock, something bacteria can live on. You can put it in your sump and leave display empty.

you could try bio pellets, but overall all I do not think this is a good idea.
Without rock and sand there will not be proper bacteria growth. Also if you wan't a minimal aquascape then you could use small amounts of rock and sand.

You could actually do it if you don't put fish in the tank and keep up with your water changes. Once you add a fish you would need to make daily water changes.
