could someone just tell me whether i need my lights on while im cycling my tank to boost live rock growth or something and how long

No you dont need them on all you will get is more algae.

I leave mine on just to see what type of algae will grow and to see what type of CUC I will be needing.

Nope, no lights required. There is no set time to a cycle. Get a test kit and test your parameters (Ammonia, phosphates, nitrites, nitrates) once you have 0 ammonia 0 nitrites and elevated nitrate levels, this is a good indicator your cycle is near its end and you can perform water changes.
