Is it safe to use teflon tape for my pvc threading? Some may be exposed to water (in external overflow etc.

yes, absolutely. another option is also the paste. both work really wel lwith no issues.

teflon tape or paste should NOT be used with threaded pvc plumbing.
Simply finger tight plus one or two turns MAX..

For any exterior (out of water) threaded connections "thread sealant" (for PVC) should be used..

i use both everyday, im a plumber. use on or the other or both, but dont use none at all
