I have a stand which has some water damage to the mdf skin. To be clear, the frame itself is solid wood and undamaged. All water damage is purely aesthetic. I'm reluctant to cut out the damaged MDF and replace those portions with solid wood because I suspect it will be difficult to get everything to match up perfectly.

Is it feasible to sand down the damaged areas and to seal the areas up with a spar urethane or other material? Are there other materials that would be better-suited for the repair? The stand is currently not being used, so now is the time for me to get it prepped right. Once I get the water damage repaired, the tank will be getting fresh paint inside and out; recommendations on primers to use between the mdf sealant and the paint would also be appreciated. Thanks.
