New $650 Radion just announced.

http://************.com/2012/11/01/g2-radion-xte/

100.00 Price drop from the old Radion of 750.00 and upgraded too.

They will be selling the Old Radion now for 600 (just 50 cheaper than the new Radion) but who would buy it as the new one also has the new Lens with 30% Light Increase (a 30.00 Value) so the difference is really only 20.00 for a much inferior fixture.

What are your thoughts on the new Radion? :fish1:

I think the price for a used one just dropped 100 bucks. Can't understand why such a price difference between the new radion and the pro version.

Extra LEDs and new power supply. The old power supply can't handle the extra power.

When will this alienate potential customers? And if they indeed last 5-7 years, how long until the used market is saturated with version 1-2-3 etc.

I have been an avid DSLR buyer/user since 2003 and I can tell you that the same dynamic occurs in this segment as well. It is SOP for technology products.

No UV though. You need to buy the Pro for that.

LED's right now are right computers a 10-20 years ago. LED lights will get better and will be cheaper with more features over time. In the end I believe a light like this will be a $300 to $350. How long that will take will depend on compeition and how fast the technolgy matures.

So should you wait? I bought my HD 3 years ago for $1400 and they are now $700. Should I have not watched TV for 3 years so i could save $700? I think the answer is obvious for new tank setups. However for those wanting to switch to LED's, waiting a bit longer may be the right thing to do.

Dumb question alert..

Does no UV = less growth?

Still expensive, I would ilke to see a test between it and a maxspect.

I don't think growth is a complaint. Some feel certain colors don't appear in acros when using a light that lacks spectrum below 450nm.

I highly doubt it as the aquarium market is very small. Aquarium companies can't product quality products at a cheap price because of the lack of turnover.
Making things cheaper does not cover overheads, means you have to sell far more.

pretty soon halide will be ultimately cheaper than LED.

True, but LED's are being used in many applications outside of aquaria that help drive the technology. The LED industry is really hitting stride and we will see quality increase while costs decrease over the next few years.

The new Generation 2 fixtures are using a new Cree led also with is admitting more light which equals more par. It comes with the new lens also included. If you want UV then you have to wait for the pro. Another thing the pro is adding is more leds per fixture also. I am going to buy two of the generation 1's seeing many people have had good growth with them since they have come out... other wise they would not be still in business.

That's cool....but it seems companies keep updating their product line and models so often that a lot of the people who don't find these systems cost prohibitive keep "upgrading" to the "new and improved" version as a result its hard to get a sense of how these systems fair in the long term. Some of the selling points of these units, like LEDs lasting ages longer then conventional lamp based units seems moot when people "upgrade" to the next best thing every year or so. Obviously not everyone does this, but just saying...

XR30w is 600 and is the generation 1 fixture.

XR30w Gen 2 is 650 and has the upgraded TIR lenses and more efficient blue LEDs(Cree XT-E's)

XR30w Pro is 950 I believe and includes the new UV leds.

You have to understand the LED industry as a whole (not just the aquarium market). LED prices are dropping 50% every three years. There is no current theoretical limit for how efficient they can get, or how cheaply they can be manufactured. Similar to LCD tech, efficiencies of scale and competition are driving down costs.

Have you priced a flat panel TV lately? May not be a fair comparison, but as people have stated, when do you make the call to buy new tech when it is constantly falling in price? I put solar panels on my home 3 years ago. Today they same panels cost half as much. But I still save a ton on my electrical bill :) It was a good decision then, it is a better decision now.

Right now prices on fixtures are dropping "relatively" quickly because LED's still make up a pretty substantial part of the cost of the fixtures. As LED's continue to fall in price there will come a point when the other components (the frame, the lens, the power supply, the fans, etc) make up the majority of cost. Then prices will fall less quickly. We still have a ways to go before we hit that point.
