View Full Version : Spontaneous Anemone Growth

My main question is, has anyone ever had a bubble tip anemone regenerate from a shred of another one?

I've noticed an anemone in my tank about 4 months ago. Actually I noticed about 5 of them all at once. They were all really tiny and some were moving around the tank so I figured that they were probably Majanos and I killed off all of them that I could find except for one. There was one that was pretty much seperated from everything and didn't move around at all. Since it would shine so brightly under my actinics, I decided to keep him and just pay close attention to him if he split or moved.

Fast forward to now. That same little anemone is still around and kicking. He's actually grown to about 4x his original size and he's starting to look alot like a GBTA. Right now he's about 3/4" diameter on the oral disc and maybe 1" tall. The tentacles seem to have a bit of a bubble on their tips and he looks like he just got a second row of tentacles that grew in behind the first.

The reason I'm asking about the ability to grow back is the fact that about a month before they showed up, I had a GBTA that was destroyed by my koralia powerhead. Besides this little guy and the other 4 that I killed off, I haven't seen any other pests in my tank and I know it can't just be spontaneous generation.

Any ideas or experience with this?

It's a majano

It is most likely a majano. If you can post a pic that would help make for a positive ID. But yes, BTAs can sometimes regrow from a small piece.

It's just recently gained a second row of tentacles. At first it was just a single row around the oral disc, but they've now staggered into two rows. And it's looking like it might be getting too big for the hole that he's sitting in soon. At first you could see how thin his "stalk" was but now it's filling up the entire hole. I imagine that he'll have to move out of it soon if he keeps growing.

I think we're being blocked because we don't have access to your album on thereeftank.com. I don't see them either, even when I go directly to the link.

Brilliant. Thank you for your shrewd deductive reasoning.
