so correct me if i'm wrong but a reactor's main purpose is to crate water flow among the introduced media right?? so i was jus thinking i you used a HOB filter, removed all the cartridges and what not and just added the bio media will it work. i was just thinking this for those nano tanks that could make use of some phosphate reduction and use those tiny HOB filters? sorry for the stupid question. :fun5:

the media reactor causes the water to flow throu the media where what your describing will just cause water to flow over it. media reactors are much better at using all of the media and not just the outer parts.

your way will work just not very efficent.

Many people run various medias through HOBs, they do work, but as shifty said, the reactors are more efficient because it's a more active filtration method. Running media in the sump or in a HOB tends to be more passive since water will take the patch of least resistance, which is usually around the media.
