Just picked up a bad *** 75g tank drilled with plumbing ,lids, and stand. The tanks dimensions are 48" x 18" x 21". I need help choosing appropriate lighting.

I am looking to have enough light for whatever type of coral I want to put in the tank, but mainly I will house softies. I am also interested in LED lights but T5 HO lighting seems interesting, but really i'm open to hear your opinions on lighting. I am looking to spend around $300.

2 x250w metal halides, having a couple T5 with this does not hurt...or...
6 x54w T5HO like ATI or TEK (more in your price range)
Buying used you can find great deals on halides and t5

I would also like to know your thoughts on this eBay light.

Spend some more on leds and not having to replace bulbs will payoff. 2 20 inch fixtures would be greatl, and you could grow sps. A DIY fixture or RB fixture would be cheaper.

Ok, do you have any links that you could share? I am a LED lover and would die to have a nice set up. Thanks guys.

I am running 2 250W MH 20Ks over my 75G mixed sps reef. IMO LED is just not where it could be or should be and the cost is still too high. JMO but I like MH.

With metal halides do I NEED actinic? or just 20ks, would one 250 or 150 watt metal halide + 4 t5ho be a good combination?

Also just a thought, has anyone tried a cheaper brand LED strip like this one http://www.aquatraders.com/EVO-48-LED-Reef-Bright-p/56234.htm with T5HO's?

u don't need actinics, but i like having them. they make the colors pop, and i just like using them when im showing people my tank. right now i have 1x 250w phoenix 14k w/ 2x 54w t5ho. i think it looks good, but i'd say im limited to how much sps and where i can place them at. I'd probably go for 2x 150w with 2x t5ho blue plus.

Im really digging the on board timer and switches on some of the lights, if anyone knows of a good MH, T5, or LED setup with that I would be happy to know.

i like the halides. And odyssea's have really bad reviews, but i took my chance and have a 250w 24'' odyssea fixture on my 20g. i like it and all my sps corals grow really well. I just have to make sure all the non-sps corals are placed at the bottom.

Cheap and lighting don't usually go together very well. Forget AquaTraders, Odyssea and anything on ebay. The Tek is a decent fixture and will serve you well and you won't have to worry if will burn up.

I would go with the Tek fixture if going with T5's they are a great fixture. I went with MH's just because I like the shimmer effect.

Alright, haven't had much conversation about LED's tho, is there anyone on this forum who owns or heard of a decent LED fixture who could point me in the right direction?

I like the idea of not changing the bulbs, the Tek light is $325 before shipping + 125-150 for bulbs, so if I could find a good LED light for that same price, hands down LED wins.

Wow that is a lot of lighting. Any trouble with bleaching?

Couple options.

1) tek 6x54w would do everything you need. Reefgeek will be having a nice sale this week sometime and you could get a brand new one for a decent price.

2) 2 150w or 250w MH pendants from Aqua Medic. They were an amazing price when I got my 250w from them about a month ago. $120 to my door. All I had to buy was a bulb. With careful placement you would be fine with the 150w pendants. Adding actinics would just take some ingenuity and this is where LEDs become really nice.

3) Honestly for LEDs you will need 2-3x that budget. The Maxspect razor is a good fixture at it's price point. Personally I use and like Ecoxotic stuff.

The Ecoxotic stuff should be dropping in price soon if it hasn't already. They just released their panorama pro 2.0 modules and dropped price by $20 a module. The fixtures should follow suit.

Funny, I was looking at the Ecoexotic fixture 5 mins ago, i would have to buy two which would equal around $700 shipped, I like the separate dimming features.

I run a tek 6 bulb fixture in my 90 (48") I run all ATI bulbs and love it. You can find them used for a great deal since everyones going LED.

I'm thinking of buying two of the 48" Panorama Marine LED strips for Ecoxotic

http://www.ecoxotic.com/panorama-marine-led-system.html

And also probably gonna buy a 36" one for my girlfriends 23 long.

Let me know what you think
