I upgraded tanks and things are not as bright as they were in a more shallow tank.

My question - the tank is pretty much BB so there is light passing through that will eventually crude up nylon return lines. If I were to add a layer of crushed coral to the bottom of the tank would it increase the brightness at least from an appearance standpoint by reflecting light?

yes, yes light would reflect and hit the reef again, instead of absorbing it or passing it through.

but go with aragonite sand, and rinse it in RO/DI water to get the po4 out :) it will go a long way

The only reason I am not using sand now is I have a heavy fish load and I like to keep water flow high near the bottom. I prefer the looks of sand, just not blowing it everywhere, that is why I was thinking crushed coral - heavier.

you can use calcium reactor media ! aragonite and prety large :)

if the tank wasnt up yet, Id advice you to paint the bottom white, same effect with respect to light :)

or even a white acrylic at the bottom.

but they need to be cleaned, so ... :)
