Well has to be a better way. This sock was already machine washed bleach and 2 extra rinses. I decided to swash it in so Rodi before adding it to tank tonight. It was white as can be before this test.

Now I now lots of people saying how they don't like to put there hands in the tank because of oils and so on but I just can't believe there this junk doesn't hurt the tank. We also rinse the frozen food cause the dirty water from the food is bad. Also these socks reduce the nitrates in the tank so seems that a lot of it is just being put back into the tank?

That is a lot of crud. Guess the hand rinse is good for the tank. Was it chemical treated to reduce nitrates or did you state that due to junk removal?

Did you reverse the sock before washing?. I do this as well as rinse under the tap before washing.

I use panty hose. Cheaper and sexier.

I don't see the need to run a sock. When we did it plugged up quickly and became a nuisance in the long run. If you don't run one then no fear of not getting them totally clean. Just my humble opinion.

I know with my socks hose down, turn inside out and hose put back and hose. Get out as much water as possible. Then i soak in hydrogen peroxide for a few hours making sure all socks completely soaked then too the washer (front load) hot, heavy soiled, extra spin and rince. I read where the peroxide does better than bleach. Socks come out super wgite and almost dry. Let sit over nite so everything evapourates. I have never tried rincing after to see but would notice coloration in sump. I also change socks about a week or less

I believe you guys are just way over thinking it and being paranoid about it, if you don't mind my saying so. I use foam pads, blue bonded filter pads, for mechanical filtration, but the principle should be the same as filter socks. I rinse it in running tap water once a week. The rinse water looks like dark tea when I start out, then just keep rinsing it until clear. Then I keep reusing it, and replace it when the pad is thinned out maybe once every three months. It has now been 3 years, in a mixed reef tank that is SPS dominant, and the tank is thriving. So, IMO, just rinse those socks once a week until clear, reuse, and don't worry about it.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide , it works way better than bleach. I swap mine out every 3-4 days, take it to the sink and turn it inside out , rinse with hot water , squeeze all the crap out of it. Let it sit in Peroxide and water over night, squeeze all the water i can. Put them in the the rinse cycle and let them air dry, turn them right side up and put back in tank.

Have you tried the nylon mesh socks? I've found them to be much easier to clean.
