I am thinking of putting a 48" tek elite 8 bulb ho t5 over my 72" tank. I know it sounds a little too small but I am wondering what other peoples experiences are with this? It would come off a 90 gallon tank that I can replace the fixture on with something cheaper. I realize there will be dead spots on the sides that will have a lot less light. 12" on each side. Thanks in advance....

A 60" would be fine but I wouldn't risk a 48" on a 72" tank. You will have very little, if any, light the last 6-8" of the tank.

I am thinking the corner overflows take up a lot of that real estate already and that light spillage might help a little anyway if the light is say 6-8" off the tank.

I'm using a 48" 8x54w setup on my 72"x24"x24" mixed reef and surprisingly it does fine. I kind of have to watch what I put on the ends but I have some favia's, torch's and frogspawns that all do very well on the ends. All sps, zoo's and most lps is towards the middle 48".

I can see it doing low light corals within as far as 6" after the end of the fixture on each side but after that you may want to give the extra room for cleaning glass or Non Photosynthetic Corals. It's not bad having a few inches of leg room and if your not going to do anything that needs a lot of light.
I hate my cramped tank.
Try it, if you need more than you can figure it out, a lot of people love 8 bub fixtures. A 8x80w would be awesome for a full SPS tank, top to bottom & end to end ..maybe a few LPS , lol.

I noticed the totm has a 48" fixture over a 60" tank, which is 6 inches on each side. But I would have roughly twelve on each side. Does anyone have any pics of a set up like this?
