Trying to understand if there is a real difference between using one or the other for dosing Mag. I do regular weekly water changes of 10%. I've read Randy's article about Mag supplementation and if I understood it Mag sulfate is ok if you do regular waters changes ...?

I think you've read correctly.

It's not as good as using 10 parts magnesium chloride hexahydrate to one part epsom but for most tanks using small amount of epsom probably shouldn't hurt.

Are there any particular brands of Epsom salts to stay away from? Is there one "better' than others?

I assume this is ok?

Probably yes. I haven't found any epsom salts that I couldn't use.
I buy mine from Walmart in 4L containers.

ok, the local CVS sells it for a little more than on-line ($7.50/6lbs) but that is still a lot cheaper than the $12/gal it costs from the LFS at $3/lb for MgSuf

I always used drugstore epsom salts. Any USP product should be okay.
