Looking to spend $400 or less on a new skimmer. Its been a while since I researched or purchased a skimmer and I was hoping to get some opinions on what the top skimmer in this price range are.

-must be $400 and under
-system volume is ~180 gallons
-full mixed reef with 12 fish
-would greatly prefer recirculating. I could only do an in-sump if it was able to fit in a 10 gallon tank.

I know that there are lots of opinions out there; so lets hear 'em...

Ive been looking for one as well. Ive done alot of reading and looking around and I think wildman is right. not sure if the SRO 2000 INT would fit in a 10 gal tank or not but I know its easier to maintain than the SSS.

The SRO 2000 is internal though. I would really like to avoid that. The External model is $535.

I appreciate the input though and will continue to look at that model.

You will be able to fit the SRO-2000int in a 10 gal if you're not going to have your return pump in there.

I think you're really limiting yourself with a $400 budget for an external skimmer to service a 180... Save money a little longer and get a properly sized unit.

I can afford a larger unit without saving - that's not the issue. I was hoping to come to a conclusion as to the best external skimmer for around $400.

Right now, my purchase will probably be the SRO 3000EXT. Its $535, but since I don't really see any other worthy competitors, so be it.

Would rather blow my $400 limit than go internal.
