I bought a 90g 36"X24"24" tank and i have to build a stand for it since the dimensions are rather unusual.

I'm torn between building one with 2X4'' and plywood only. And since it's only 36" long,i'd like to have no center brace in the front if possible. I'm tempted to make a plywood one since it would give me more space for my sump.

My question is, would a plywood box made of 3/4" plywood work for a 90g tank? Any suggestions or exemples of stand for a similar tank?

Yes 3/4 plywood will hold well over a 90 gal tank. Be sure to build it so the support is directly under the sides, front, and back of the tank. If you use a full sheet for the front and cut out the opening you will have plenty of open face.

Ok thanks. How wide would you leave the plywood all around the opening?

No less than 4'' top and bottom no less than 3'' on the sides

Got the tank yesterday. Boy it's heavy. It's 0.5'' starphire glass. Still think a plywood box would be ok? Any way to brace it to make it stronger?

The plywood stand would definitely be strong enough if you use screws and glue

I used 3/4 oak ply on a acrylic tank the same size, you will be fine. I placed a 3/4 top on my stand to support the bottom of the tank and to give the stand some more strength. If you are still in question send me a pm and I can talk about other way to build a stand.

3/4" is plenty, and I've been Using a lot of Arauco Ply lately available from Lowes and Menards. Its fairly spendy at ~35$ a sheet but it a High quality EXTERIOR 7ply with very few voids and is strong stuff. It Carries an ACX rating. For reference the factory stand that came with my 210gallon oceanic is only 3/4 MDF "stone look" paint on it.

Thanks for the help guys. But won't it sag in the middle if i don't have any brace in the front?

I also wasn't sure about building a plywood box for a stand, so i used rocketengineers stand guide. You can do a search for it here and go from there. My tank dimensions are similair to ours 36" x 30" x 20". I also wanted a braceless center. I went with 2" x 6"'s for the top ring so that I could go braceless. I built a stand in the past with this method for a 6' x 3' footprint and a braceless center as well and the stand was bomb proof, i swear. Its probably overkill and a lot of people are going to tell you this, which is probably true, but their is not a dought in my mind that the stand cant hold my tank.

Yes i'm sure a stand made of 2"X 4" and 2"X6" would be more than strong enough. But the problem i have with the design is doesn't leave me with as much room for a sump like a plywood box would.
