its got tentacles that reach out past the spines and it seems to pick everything up. it keeps cruising thru the sand and grabbing my nasarius snails too and coral frags. only had it in the tank for like 4 hours.

Haha ya they do that, its completely normal, though potentially annoying!

he finally stopped doing it and now its on my glass cleaning all the algae and not trying to grab everything anymore.

A good number of urchins are decorators. They camouflage themselves with whatever is laying around so as to avoid predators.
