I thought I would try some felt filter socks. I put it on and in three days it was pretty brown. I didn't notice if the water was any clearer. I couldn't see any use for them because there was a lot less in my skimmer.

I don't think filter socks should reduce the amount of skimmate in your skimmer by very much at all. Socks remove stuff that is more likely to end up settling out on your LR, sand bed and in the bottom of your sump. Skimmate is very small and light enough to be carried up on bubbles.
When I run socks my sump bottom and DSB stay cleaner. I don't see much difference in the water clarity and no difference in my skimmate (I get a lot).
