Do I need the pliers or can you just muscle them apart and together with out the added cost?

nah, can do it by hand easily. It takes a decent amount of force to assemble them though - you may think your breaking it but your not.

its easiest to work with out of the tank, and not screwed to anything. if your trying to assemble something at the bottom of your tank, its gonna be a pain, but doing it in your lap then screwing it into a bulkhead is a peice of cake.

Make sure your hands are dry and it should be no prob to snap it and out.

If you're putting them together or taking them apart outside of the tank, here's what I do. Put the pieces of loc-line in a bowl, boil enough water to cover the pieces in the bowl, let sit for about 5 minutes. The hot water softens everything up enough so you can easily snap them together or apart. MUCH easier.
