I'm new to the hobby and have some questions about things in my tank.
First.. I have a BTA given to me from someone who told me he's been pretty closed up for months. He's firmly attatched to the rock but never opens.
Secondly I have something growing on the rocks that doesnt look like anything in any of the hitchhikers guides. Any ideas?
third is something else I found. Its very tiny.. almost clear and opens up and closes like an umbrella. once again.. never seen it on the guides. any help would be appreciated.

#1- looks to be a closed up mushroom/polyp of some sort.
#2-seems to be some little tube worms / feather dusters.
#3-can't see it? Hope this helps. . .

#2 are hydroids. Not something you want. They tend to sting anything nearby.

Does your BTA ever open -- even at night or partially? Does he have any color left? Does he take food? My short experience with them is that the first few weeks in a new environment can create truly bizarre behavior. In fact, we call ours An"emo"ne - heavy emphasis on the emo.
If it dies, though, get it out fast!

Get the hydroids out. They're nasty & they can rapidly take over a tank, killing off other critters in the process.

1.)What is your alkaline in this tank?
Posting all paremeters would help.
2)Hydroids,very nasty, fast growing pest that sting.
3)possible just a simple sponge.

#1 is def a BTA.... it moves around a bit but has never opened in my tank. The guy who gave him to me said he's pretty much been like that for months. I never see tentacles.. just always looks like that. A wad of bubble gum.
#2.. is there anything that kills the hydroids or eats them? could the aptasia methods work on hydroids?
thanks for your replies... when I get around to it.. I'll post some pictures of my tank.

You could always use some epoxy and smother those hydroids.

#3 turned out to be a jelly fish. I woke up one morning to see it swimming around the tank. Only saw it for a short while until it disappeared. Probably got sucked up into a pump or something. Pretty neat though.
