I want to put a 40B under a 125g tank. Both are the same width. Not sure how to do this. I was thinking a 38" span in the middle to that they would both have rails to rest on. I am just not sure that would provide enough support for the 125g. It is 72" long so a 38" span would leave supports at:

<-17-><----38----><-17->

Is a 38" span ok or too wide?

38" span should be fine if you use a 2x8 for the top rails that the 125 sit on. I did something similar on my 120 stand in order not to have a center brace and it is rock solid.

if u put 2x8s on the top u won't even need the center braces

Assuming it has a frame, then all the weight is distributed to the outside edges of the tank. No center supports required.

Use 2x6's for the top rim and the legs, leave the middle wide open. Then on the bottom rim use 2x4's for it and just make sure to have cross braces where the edges of the 40B will be sitting....

I used 2x6's for the top rim and legs on my 180 and it left me a ton of room to work with. It'll be no problem on a 125.

Thanks! I already built the top frame with 2x6s and my 125 also has the mega-flows exactly like yours. I see that you used NO supports other then the corners. While I am sure this is very strong, I will put two more at 17" in. As you know, that is dictated by where the bottom holes are drilled.

Correct. I used no other supports because they're not needed to support the tank if you use 2x6 top frame and legs.... That was my point, why not give yourself even more room to work under the tank unobstructed?

That's a 75g underneath my 180 for the sump, so a 40B is even easier to squeeze in. So while you're fine putting the additional supports in, they're not necessary when building these stands this beefy.

I built my stand for the 210 with a 2x6 top and everything else was 2x4's. I could have left the front wide open without any vertical supports (or so I was told) but felt like I wanted some extra reassurance and added two 2x4 vertical supports on the outsides of the front. I left a 49" front opening so I still have easy access and a 4ft sump slides right in.
