I'm getting a new skimmer for my 180g FOWLR tank. I'm thinking of either the Super Reef Octopus 2000 External or the Marine Technical Concepts 250X. I'd appreciate opinions on these skimmers if you're using them or suggestions for something else. I'll be replacing an MRC MR2 that I wasn't happy with.

Thanks for your input.

Man I miss my Mrc 3 dual injector. That thing was a beast and did an awesome job. What didn't or don't u like about it? Corals declined when I went to a BK 250. Thinking something to do with maybe the mesh wheel over the beckett foam head?

I'd like to keep it to $500 max.

What's the budget?

It never worked right from day 1. It required constant adjustment. Skimmers I've seen, even other MRC skimmers look like they're full of milk that's how dense the bubbles are. My MRC never ever looked like that. I'm running a Reeflo Marlin pump which is a pretty powerful pressure rated pump, but the skimmer acts as if I'm using a Maxi-Jet. I've cleaned the Becketts and the air valves, but I still get nothing. The other thing I had to constantly deal with is a constantly fluctuating water level. One minute the water level would be fine where I set it. A few hours later, the level would drop. I've contacted MRC and they're no help. In fact, their customer service is horrible. No one can figure what's wrong, so I figured I'd move on to something else and hope I have better luck.

Sro-2000 or 3000. Love my 1000!

I have a 175 bowfront and have a SRO 3000int. Works great, highly recommended. I had the SRO 2000 but upgraded as I was emptying every 3 days as I feed heavy and have a heavy fish load. Definitely a noticeable difference in the amount of organics removed with the 3000. The SRO 3000Int can be found for under $500 new. I have also used both the XP and Non XP models and noticed no difference. Save the money and get the NonXP model
