I'm about to buy a diamond watchman goby, and was wondering if there needs to be sand in the quarantine tank. it's only 20 gallons so I could get it ready with sand and then take it out after he gets out of quarantine and into my main tank... also, can I quarantine him with another fish? like maybe a small yellow or powder brown tang?

Thanks!
Troy

Put sand in a deep tuperware dish.

You don't need any sand in the QT for gobies. They'll be fine with lots of hiding places which can be provided by PVC pieces.

Should be fine with another fish in there. Just make sure you put a screen top on. They tend to jump out.

sticky Guide to Qt explains similar to this in post #76
quote:
"1" minimum to 2" deep is fine.
Reason for not to use live sand, live rock, or any carbonate-based decorations is when you medicate with copper and/or other meds, this material interferes with the proper dosage. Also, if using copper, the life will die in the sand and the rock and cause a spike of ammonia and nitrite. For a sick fish, this can be near instant death. Silica sand doesn't cause any problems noted above.

Note: even though you dont really need sand in the QT and the fish can live in QT without sand without any ill effects. Also remove the sand when fish is out of QT. "

I just got done adding a watchman goby. He did fine in a bare bottom QT. just make sure you have a jump screen. Even with a screen mine managed to jump out once while I was changing water and made it past the screen into the HOB filter another time.

I named him Felix (...Baumgartner :)
