DSA NEO 105 Build

[Tweaked]

I have been starring at this tank since all pets got it in a year ago. At first, I hated the back wall,but it grew on me and and love rimless tanks as I have a couple already.

The plan is transfer most of my sps and start over with a more minimal setup and large water column. I am also still debating a bare bottom as my wife's frag tank is very easy to maintain being bare, and just love it.

Quick update. A Sherman tank disguised as a light arrived today- the Hamilton Cebu Sun. Crazy heavy and built like a tank. Gonna have to strengthen the hanging mount as there is no way I would run it on the tank having rimless. Also, after looking at the frag wall, it looked there might be small holes in it which could trap detritus behind it so I ripped that out.

Lol. Still have to remove some silicon and paint the back. I am probably gonna run sand now, but not decided. In the process of planning the plumbing utilizing my through wall 55 gallon sump which I am guessing should be about 120g total water volume on the system.

Crazy busy at work right now so not much time. I hate doing budgets lol. Anywho back is off and most silicon removed that they used to glue in back wall. Left lower silicon and guess its a sand bottom now. Oh well.

Chugging right along. Old tank moved 6 feet to the side and running at half a tank keepin my sps going. Got all the plumbing through the wall done, and everything back and wired to the apex controllers. At the mercy of the rodi unit now.

Nice build. I recently put together a reef system with a DSA 135. Loved it, but too loud in the overflow and sump. Plumbed it with a Herbie setup, nearly silent now. Don't know why they sent a dual Durso, when the tank is really perfect for the Herbie. Systems almost silent now, and adjustable... Just a heads up in case you're in the same boat.

I'd love to show off my project, I'll shoot a few pics when I get home... But to answer your question, yes, it has the standpipe halfway up, and the emergency is a durso, with two returns. I feel like the tank was made for it, even though they send dual dursos with their kit.
I am, however, going to change the durso to a open standpipe, like the other, but taller. The reason being that the overflow changes its level of noise based on the height you set with the gate valve. I want a taller emergency drain without the added height of the durso, as to prevent it from being visible with my canopy open. There's a balance between the height, aeration, and noise, achieved by the gate valve. I'm very OCD...

That 105 is gorgeous! Almost makes me wish I went rimless... I painted my back just like that. Looks clean from the back, and nice to have a little more visibility in there. Great Job!

Yep aware of the noise from reading but not worried about it. This tank sits down in our bar room with a couple other systems. One being a deep blue 30g frag tank that has a flushing sound as it is. It would be like going to the beach and not hearing a sound- depressing lol

If you like scratches lol! Previous owner cleaned it with a lava rock or something, but sold me the tank, stand, light, sump, and 50lbs of live pukani for $200 so couldn't resist. Gonna basically give it all away now to someone looking for hospital or frag tank.

Update: All my sps colonies transfered over in to the new tank. Use all same rock and now only half full. Nice having more space as I will be moving all my lps and zoos for the garden effect on the front areas.

Was able to keep my 55g sump running the whole time with all my base rock as to not lose the bacteria. That with a 20g fuge and deep sand bed, I was able to what seems so far as skip a cycle. All I did was loose the sand, and loving the BB look - plus I have the vortech cranked and no sand storms.

Using my last mistakes as a learning experience - NO Tangs lol. In fact, the 105 now belongs to my maroon clown, and have always liked him. You can see him hosting the green torch in the pics above. His mates are 4 chromis, one possum wrasse, and one blue mandarin. One cleaner shrimp. KISS. Keep it simple will be my angle this time. Bare bottom and a simple stock list.

I was very nervous about the background but after talking to the guys over at Universal rocks I came up with a plan to put a pump inlet on one side and an outlet on the opposite side to keep the water moving behind it. Not sure what I should do now.

Hilarious, as that is what I came up with. A small return from the sump, over the back wall and pumping into the frag wall to keep the flow moving. Howver, it just seemed stupid to have to do that, so I ripped it out. Warning, be ready for 30 hours at least of silicon removal!:headwally:

You’re going to get allot of different opinions here, but they should not be mixed. The carbon can reach its end of usefulness very fast, arguably overnight. So.... I tumble the GFO gently, and on the output tube, run the water gently across a refillable micron bag filled with some carbon. This way the GFO runs until exhausted (2-3 weeks in my tank) and the carbon I replace after only a few days. I also am a believer of only using carbon once in a while to clear up the water.

I got mine for just under $600, no stand just tank at Puppy Center. I have to say that the DSA is terrible at shipping the tank on time. I got mine almost a month after they said it would ship.

Believe the rimmed versions are less expensive which makes no sense as there is more material. But yes you should be somewhere around each of these prices. GL

Update.
Added some more apex outlets and added two dosers to dose two part. Decided to keep the Kalk stirrer online for two reasons. One is two run at night to try and keep ph level stable, and second to save on two part a bit.

Love the light. It's built like a tank with 1/4" glass shield and massive fans in the unit. No heating problems.

Not much new, looking great and ramping up the halides slowly. I did finally buy another MP40 to rid myself of the plethora of koralias. Will be here tomorrow.

Finally get to play with the Neptune WXM module and get crazy with the vortec settings. I like that you can switch them up including intensity via the apex.

The coral reef in Startford. He has a few as well as a real nice war paint scoly. Looking to cover the bottom with LPS and such, just crazy expensive for these scolys.

Also removed my DSB and macro algae from the fuge and switched to more LR and a small ball of chaeto. Slowed down flow in chambers and should help trap detritus for easier removal.

Actually have been slacking on the wxm programming. Just running the 40's in anti sync right now. I have my dc pump coming today and ordered a boatload of sch80 pipe fittings, pipe, valves, and a Georg fischer check valve. This will be my project this week among other things. Lol.

Also building a double pulley hoist system for the wife's jk jeep, mine is a soft top tj. See ya there

Ahh system huh. Try 5000 watts via two large Xtant Amps, 3 JL Audio 15's, 2 6.5's, 2 5.5's, 2 4x6's, and 6 tweeters all Alpine. 220Amp altenator, re-wired all of truck grounds and altenator with JL Audio 0 guage cable pushed by a alpine head unit. I can't sit in it for more than a second, and can throw cups straight out of the cup holders against the dash. Imagine 45" of air movement behind the seats in a small cab. For those that will ask, I did it cause I can lol. Full air ride suspension, tubular upper and lowers, custom 3 link, brake upgrades, boyd 18's, bla bla bla. Garage queen- bought new in 2001 and now sits with 28k miles.

Sounds sweet! I have loved minis and trucks since my dad gave me a mini dodge ram when I turned 15. We lived in the high desert of cali, so I was allowed to drive as long as I stayed on the dirt roads- pssssh - that was the entire desert lol. It was a blue mini I heated the springs on back in the early 90's when it was big in socal to have a mini truck with a loud system. This time around I wanted to go big. In addition, I have just passed the tradition on and gave it to my son when he turned 15 in Jan as my father did. He said no of course at first, but his girlfriend loves the truck and he's coming around. He said dad, that's your baby lol

haha, you sound like me. I got an old 91 ranger I got before I graduated high school that I've been driving ever since. Got bored a few years ago and wedged a 92 mustang 5.0 in it. Had time to get the waveline 6000 in. Replaced two pumps, mag drive 9.5 and a mj1200. Pump is great and more powerful at half the watts, plus the soft start is nice. Went with three valves and used one to return back to the skimmer side for sort of a recirculation. The other two are the return and media reactor.

Well the stock ballasts couldn't run the Radiums, and the Hamilton M80s run the bulbs the way they should be. Something like over 300 watts a piece. These bulbs absolutely rock, and the colors of my fish now is just stunning.

Ya, horrible craftsmanship!! Was riddled with small holes which would make it a detritus trap. When I finally got it unsiliconed from the tank and held it up in the light, I was very relieved I decided to remove it. Junk!

Sump update.

Added RO pellet reactor and 1/4 cup of biospheres and plumbed into skimmer. Been running over two weeks now.

Also was given a mantis shrimp by APC, and set the little guy up a small tank for now. Was all green when I got him, now displaying orange and reds along with the green and pushing an inch and a half. I will say it is so neat to feed this guy and watch him club the crap out of things.

Had a Peacock Joe was holding for me, but after thought and ordering glass holes kit, pump, mp10, etc. I decided against adding to my system at this point. Maybe add to wife's tanks, but who knows. Anywho, Joe has the Peacock for $15 if anyone looking. Thing is huge and colorful.

Pat that's not what I meant.... I think a mesh cover is absolutely necessary if you have a rimless tank and keep fish that are prone to jump..... I know I lost a ton of fish to jumping.... My next build will have a canopy......

Oh definitely. I spend a ton of money on wattage daily and want every bit of it to penetrate. Even the clarity of your water affects par to the coral. Things like salt on glass, screen tops, distance, and water quality all have an effect on light getting to the coral.

No I think I'm going to do a LED's with T5 combo. I'm leaning towards 3 Photon 16's and 2 T5 bulbs over each section of the 180 gallon tank... i've heard a lot of good things about the LED and T5 combo, plus I wanted to switch away from the Orphek light. i love the light it gives but the controllability is just not what I was looking for.....

Sump room. Added Mag doser to dose all three daily, put my Kalk reactor back online, still running Carbon, GFO, and Bio Pellets plus... I added a 36w UV Sterilizer.

AcroPower on dosing pump installed, and instead of dropping into the sump like the others, I ran into the display with a rigid tube I bent and zipped to my light cords. Runs for 9 hours from 11 at night to 8 in the morning when the acros seem to extend their polyps the most giving me about 9.9ml a day which is where I have been dosing manually.

Next item of business- frag tank as I start to move more sticks in and out. An awesome light became available, and couldn't help snagging at a great deal. This is a halide/led hybrid that will work great with transitioning to my halides. The fixture is currently running a phoenix bulb, however I will be switching over to a radium as I just prefer the crisp white bulb.

After 15 years of the same white bottles, they changed them. Cheap plastic now that may or may not leak in shipping. There was an issue in shipping which is why I ended up with so much- pro-bono.

I built the whole split out the front PVC and just didn't get around to painting it as I couldn't wait to start filling up the tank. I did however, resist the urge to add any sand to my system despite the push from everyone to do so. BB all the way:thumbsup:

The beauty of the flower anemone, an under-appreciated gem for any reef aquarium

I have always been a champion of the underdog when it comes to corals in this hobby and what is considered the most popular at the moment, often times are not my favorites. Flower anemones (Epicystis crucifer) are a truly underappreciated animal, mainly because they do not host clown fish and most retailers only carry the common tan, white, army green color morphs.

Many people I talk with seem to think all anemones are created equal meaning they are hard to keep, move all around your tank killing corals in the process, grow very large, and will jump into your powerhead at a moment’s notice. The popular clownfish-hosting anemones, like rose bubble tip (Entacmaea quadricolor) and long tentacle anemone (Macrodactyla doreensis), do tend to support this belief.

Flower anemones may not host clownfish but they have so much more going for them. They are one of the easiest anemones to keep and once introduced to a rocky spot in your tank that has good light, they usually will never move. If they do move they creep and will not jump off into the water column. They do host porcelain crabs, sexy shrimp, and anemone shrimp which are very entertaining and interesting to keep in a reef tank.

Flower anemones can be kept in groups, creating a beautiful anemone garden. They love light as their main source of food and can also be trained to take mysis shrimp if you want your anemone to grow faster. Most flower anemones grow to about 5 to 6 in. wide and it takes a long time for most to reach this size without supplemental feedings.

Best of all, flower anemones come in some really phenomenal color morphs. These particular flower anemones came from about 30 feet of water and preferred shadier areas of the reef compared to the more light-loving flower anemones I usually keep. Though these morphs are quite rare, there are plenty of neon colored flower anemones that are more readily available.

If you are looking to buck the status quo and try something new, do not hesitate to get one or more of these hardy, beautiful anemones that will be a definite standout in your tank.

Man, the more fluorescence in these guys, the harder the pic.. At least on my phone. Oh well, they are amazing none the less.

Got a hang on acrylic box, cut a slit for a gentle wave entry location, smashed up some rock from the sump, and added a makeshift garden to the frag tank. This puts them directly under the LEDs for even more pop. Fed them each a mysis last night, and these things can spawn, how cool would that be.
