I have a few questions for the Clownfish Guru's out there.....

I was wandering what is the life expectancy for the Clownfishes when they start breeding?

Since the male gets very little rest what is his life expectancy?

Does this wear them out compared to other fish?

Is it good or bad for the female to lay the eggs 2 days after the rock or item is cleared of the other eggs?

I wouldn't consider myself a guru by any means, but I know some people locally that've had their clowns for over 10 years, some of which have been breeding for several years. I'm pretty sure spawning twice a month or so is pretty common in the wild so I wouldn't expect that to shorten their life span. Just my opinion...hope that helps.

Don't have the link but there was someone in Canada with a ~25 year old Occ. (female) that had laying eggs. It was solo and not laying at the time I read about it, but nonetheless.

Wow I would not have thought they would live that long laying eggs at the rate that they lay them. Including the male since they get very little rest if any rest at all.

Interesting thought, I would think breeding full time would shorten their life in the wild.

Well I'm no guru either, but I do have a spawning pair of Maroon Clownfish. They're at least 6 or so years old & have been spawning for about 4 years. The male seems fine, not overly worked that I can tell. Not sure where one would get the idea that spawning would shorten their lifespan? It's what they've evolved to do presumably over thousands of years. They're built for it. No spawn, no species survival.

Thanks. I just thought it might would wear them out.

25 year old clown fish in captivity wonder how long they can live in the wild

There are more predators & competition in the wild. I'd guess their chances of a long life in the ocean aren't as favourable as in our tanks. But that's just a guess. A marine biologist specializing in Nemos would probably have a better idea of average lifespan in the wild.

Thanks Mike. Do we know of a biologist specializing in Nemos around this forum?

There other fishes that will have shorten life span from excessive breeding. Breeders usually keep the males and females separate and only put them together for short period when they want to breed them. However, I don't think clownfish is not one of those sensitive fish.

I've always heard fish tend to live much longer in captivity.
