I am cycling a 75 gal soon to be mixed reef I am looking at adding only one or two sps. I have sugar fine sand and want to know if I should use one mp40 or two mp10. I appreciate any comments from with this. Thanks

I tried both ways with my 75g mixed reef, I ended up being happier with the 2x MP10s. It really comes down to personal preference and rock structure/coral placement though.

I have a 75G mixed reef. Just added a single MP40. I haven't had enough time to do a good evaluation yet but I do have a couple of koralia 240's on the back wall tho.

I have had it on reef crest mode turned a little over half way up. The undertow on this pump is crazy tho. I can tell u that. My sand doesn't move in reef crest mode

The undertow scares me with the sugarfine sand

I would do 2 MP-10's. I have a single MP-40 in my 90g and can't wait to get another on the opposite side. I have to run it at 100% to get enough flow on the other side of the tank, I would much rather dial it back a bit and have one facing it.

I was leaning towards one 40 but now I am really thinking about 2 10s. So confusing

I would go two mp10s, the synchronizing of the two pumps will eliminate any dead spots. The mp40 would as well if you turn It up high enough but then I don't think You would like the amount of sand that gets displaced

I started with two mp10 on my 90 gallon. Can sync them up in reef crest mode. Since I have added a 3rd mp10 on the back wall. With this configuration 0 dead spots and tons of flow. Awesome. I found with 2 mp10 tank did have a very small portion with a dead spot. The three together are simply awesome

I am in the same boat with dfm34 I just bought me a new 75 with a center overflow and was wondering the same question. But with two mp10 wouldn’t you have to run them at 100% or can you dial them back since you have two?

I found on my 30g I wanted more flow than a single 10 could do. Two would have been perfect but I could not take the noise

how loud are they?? I would think for that kind of money you are paying for them they would be quiet

I have a mp10 on my 30 gal. I only have to ru. It at half or just under half. At that speed I can not hear it at all

I never considered the noise factor. Is one 40 not as loud as 2 20s?

My bad typing from my phone I meant two mp10. Are two 10s that much louder then one 40

They are not very loud, just that the motor is outside the tank so it humms a little. The reason I don't like them is that you can not direct the flow, something you might want to consider if you have sugar fine sand. They do look great though, almost like a closed loop.

I set up a mp40 on my 125 with a koralia 1400 point up from the opposite side. In short plus mode about half way up it creates a nice wave motion in my tank. I know it isn't a 75, but just for comparison sake.

What would recommend to use for directional flow?

Pretty much any other powerhead, these are the only ones I have ever seen where you can not change the direction. A payoff for taking up so little space in the tank I guess. Tunze has good ones with the same functionality, or similar atleast and so does Jebo if you want to go really cheap. Seems the Jebo ones have not launced in N America yet though so you have to buy them from Europe or China and change the power supply. Might end up the same price as Tunze but with lower quality after all the extras :)

I've read that mp10 are usually noisey when they are dialed up a lot.. I am on the same boat on which to get. I might just go with 2 mp40 when I get a chance although I was wondering for those that run 2 mp10s on ur 75 or 90g what mode and how strong do you have it set

I run two mp10s on my 75g. They do make some noise, but I've found noise is a personal thing and what may be noisy for me, may be tolerable for you. I keep them set on reef crest mode at max setting, so they ramp up and down constantly occasionally making what I would consider alot of noise. But that being said, a couple minutes in front of the tank and I'm so relaxed the noise doesn't really register in my brain lol. :D

dfm34 mentioned sugarfine sand though... even with just mp10s, my crushed aragonite gets blown around with that undertow they can make. Sugarfine sounds scary.
