I bought a rock that had 3 Xenia Coral's on it the other week from my LFS. I've never owned a Xenia coral before, so this is my first one introduced into my tank. The first three days I would say it was thriving pretty well, looked healthy and what not. But then I realized just recently that one out of the 3 of them is melting away. The other 2 are looking in fine health, no hands fell off when i siphoned around it unlike the 1 I have.
I've done a good amount of research about this to just be as confused as everyone else is. Xenia isn't a fully understood coral as some grow like weeds and others don't. I do know that Xenia does appreciate dirtier water conditions so I unplugged my skimmer for a good 2 days now and things are already looking better. The Xenia is in the middle of the tank more towards the back in great lighting (2 Brand new 50/50 65Watt bulbs for my Coralife power compact).
I also purchased some Lugol's Iodine from my LFS yesterday and did my first dosage of 1 drop/week, hopefully this will help my Xenia's grow better. My guy at the LFS also told me he would bring me some B-Ionic part 1 and 2 solutions as he has some at his house, hopefully that can also help my tanks Alk. levels be in a better stable condition among the corals.
