/scratch removal? Used tank my brother bought has a ton of scratches we noticed after putting the light on. Tried a scratch removal kit but now thinking its a job for the pros. Anyone know if anyone that does this? Tried a quick google search to no avail.

I talked to a glass company once about this. They told me that if you can see the scratches in the tank it is cheaper to replace it than pay their labor.

I have a 300DD that the starphire glass is 'etched' from the previous owner not removing the coralline...have tried buffers, sanders, acids, compounds and nothing seems to make even a slight difference!
Was told to try steel wool, or a clay bar... If not its a big sump!

Its a 160 rr bow front. Kind of pricy to replace the tank. Even if it cost $1000 he would still be ahead.

If they are deep you have to sand down to where its even then polish a clay bar would take for ever but would work a high powered buffer should work with the right grit paste

Wow, if it works out, I'll have to bring the guy up to Westchester!

I'll post results. My brother said the guy is just over a week behind so it will be a little while.

What kit did you use? I need to remove some scratches on the 120 that I just bought as well.

Well I'm thinking it is a lost cause for scratch removal. Talked to my brother tonight. The guy came out last week and decided he would need to buy some extra tools for the job as the scratches were deeper than he thought. My brother offered to buy whatever the guy needed to do the job.
Guy came, many hours later got it back to about where it was, but most scratches still remain. Some of the lighter ones may have come out. The guy ended up only charging him 120 and took a loss on the tools he bought.
Moral here, Look over a used tank really good. I was there when he bought it and it looked perfect. Amazing the difference with lights on and without. This thing is a total loss. I told him try to sell it as a big sump and start looking for a new one. :(
