View Full Version : Can You Reuse Media?

Hello,

I'm talking about the filter media you place in your main tank so it becomes 'seeded', and is then placed in your QT for six weeks while fish are observed.

Is it safe to rinse the media, let it completely dry out for a few weeks, then place back in main tank so next batch can go through QT. Or.. is it recommended to toss it and start with new media?

So far I've run two sets of fish through QT. Prazipro was only additive used in QT, nothing else. Would be nice to save a little $$$ and reuse.

Thanks in advance.

No one has any thoughts/comments on this subject?

Guess I'm tossing the old stuff and will plan on only using new media for each QT cycle.

I would say you will be ok to reuse the media as long as no meds touched it. I am not sure how good meds can stay on the media even after cleaning it but i wouldnt chance it putting it back on the dt.

You should be ok reusing it, particularly if you bleach and rinse well and let it dry out. I just toss it to make sure there is no contamination and the time cleaning isn't worth the cost savings.
