I'm getting a 20H to set up for my sump, would a HoB style Skimmer like a Reef Octopus BH100 work in my sump?

It would work, but if your having a sump why not an in sump skimmer. Also what is your DT size? Not sure how large a volume the hob versions are rated for atm, but I would consider that too.

40B display. I was looking at the HoB Skimmers to save a bit of $$ right now, went through my tax refund quicker than I thought XD

So you'll get a sub par skimmer cheap right now, then later realize why it was so cheap and want to get rid of it, then dump it because it has no resale value and finally get yourself a good skimmer?

Your money and your choice. Just saying...

I used a HOB coralife skimmer in my original sump for 6 months with I shopped craigslist for a better sump and skimmer to use. I kept a light bio load and it worked ok. It was definitely not my long term plan but it worked for a while until I found a good deal to up grade to

The water level is going to have to be pretty high for that skimmer to operate properly, there may not be enough room in the sump for the water that will drain back once you shut off your return.
If you can stretch your budget a little, this (http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/reef-octopus-nwb110-4-pinwheel-in-sump-protein-skimmer.html) would be a better option.

Thanks for the question Silvergryphon and thanks for informative response downbeach. I have a BH100 in my sumpless setup and have been contemplating moving to a sump. The BH100 requires the waterlevel to be a few inches below the rim of the tank.

I figured I would ask lol Still learning as I go, hoping to have it finally set up and cycling within the next month.

It can work.

An in-sump skimmer is a lot more efficient though. I'm kicking myself for getting a Reef Octopus BH2000 skimmer instead of an in-sump skimmer.
