I'm running with no sump (spouse reasons) but have protein skimmer and canister filter. I've read that you can remove the media in the filter and replace with live rock. Is this effective?

you could always remove the spouse and replace with live rock :)just kidding..putting live rock in a canister will work as a bio filter quite well...did that same thng on a tank years ago and it was fine
What kind and size of tank? That is a life and death difference. What are you keeping in there?
I think a canister filter is not a good idea unless you look at it as a reactor for carbon or GFO.
Not including a sump is a really bad idea unless you have one of those tiny tanks with hardy livestock.

I've seen some very nice tanks with canisters, I have ran tanks on canisters and you have to keep the canisters well maintained.
I found that live rock will get clogged with crud, its best to just run carbon, gfo and filter floss. Floss must be changed at least weekly

I ran a 110 gallon softie tank for three years with a Rena X4 filled with LR and an aqua clear 500 with gac and floss with no probs. Weekly 10% water changes and monthly filter maintenance on the Rena helped.
