View Full Version : Dead blenny

I tried to follow all the suggestions posted about setting up a QT and acclimating. I have two QTs running. I used one for a couple yellowtail damsels and one for a bicolor blenny. The damsels are alive and fine, but the blenny didn't make it. I can't help but think I did something wrong, but I can't figure it out...
I'm sad and a little disappointed.

The blenny's tank was 10 gallon. I used cycled water (1.024 salinity, 8.2 pH) from my DT + filter floss which had sat in my sump for 1.5 weeks. The temp was a little low when I put in the blenny (74; for some reason the heater wasn't plugged in that morning; I plugged it in about 2 hours before the blenny arrived) and it raised to 78. The blenny didn't live more than 3 hours...
I guess what surprises me is that the damsels seem just fine and the blenny didn't.

3 hrs is fast, i suspect toxic. have u checked ammonia and nitrites? i have a feeling ur tank may be showing signs of mini cycle.
using DT water and floss has no guarantee for instant cycle. check ur parameters before introducing also while the tank sit empty/fishless u need to ghost feed every other day to keep cycle.
check for ammonia and post back. also what is the procedure u performed from the time getting the blenny to into the tank.
Note: Damsels are hardy and can survive a mini cycle, back in the day they used to cycle tanks with them (not recommended).
if u find ammonia and nitrites ur tanks are still cycling. u can either take the damsel out or use prime or do water changes daily till it passes.

Ammonia was fine. That was the first thing I checked... I guess it could have been nitrates.
I'm going to wait a while before I get more fish, so I'll try to do better the next time...

Nitrates won't kill fish unless its extremely high. 200+ppm. 50+ will add stress, but not lethal. What was that tank previously used for? What did you clean it with? Was the Benny heathy looking at the lfs?
If it died in less than a day, probably wasn't your fault with no ammonia present in the tank.
