View Full Version : Is it ready?

My tank has gone through the initial cycle and algae bloom. The Ammonia, Nitrates and Nitrites are gone. There is still some of the brown algae on the rocks but it's fading away. I do see some green hair algae but not much at all. The cycle was started on the 11th so it's been 3 weeks roughly.

Do you guys think it safe to add a fish or a coral? My original plan was to just let it be for a month but now that everything seems to be done cooking... Ca, dkH, Mg are all very stable also.

Thanks,

BK

Sounds like you are cycled if your nitrite and ammonia are gone. Should be safe to start adding some life. Do you have a plan for what you are going to stock the tank with? I'm of the mindset that the sooner you can start filling the tank with corals, the better you can control nutrients as they will uptake them versus algae. Small cleanup crew at first to keep problem algae at bay and slow on the fish additions at first. Just my thoughts though.

Sounds like it's ready to me. I'd just start with a couple small hardy fish and a sturdy coral that won't become a nuisance. Oh, and a small cleanup crew to start taking care of the algae before it gets out of hand.

I was thinking a couple of Zoa frags and a clown or two to see what happens.

I hate selecting a CUC. I never know what to get. What should I get?

Seems like a solid plan to me. I'm going to focus on easy to keep stuff like Zoas and LPS. Maybe add some easier to keep SPS later on. I love the large branching coral like Green Slimer.

Any chance you have a frag of the purple mushroom? That may be the ideal starter coral and it's awesome looking.

Well, the magnet cleaner keeps the glass clean, so really just some critters to clean and pick at the rocks. Think small hermit crabs, trochus grazer snails stay small and live about 7 years in stable conditions, stomatella varia reproduce in the tank, strombus grazers reproduce in the tank as well. A nice start up with pods, bristle worms and spaghetti worms from someone else's tank if you trust they don't have plagues of other things:lol:

Main thing is don't overdo the cleanup crew at first or they will just starve to death. You can always add more snails and hermit crabs if you need extra work on the rocks.
