I should getting my 60 cube tomorrow and I was thinking about the sump design. It should be around 21"x21"x12" . Its going to be a little tight fit, so I trying to design it, so it will allow me the most room for a skimmer section and a refugium section, but still having a decent size ATO. The only thing I didnt draw on it that it will have is an acrylic 4" filter sock holder that will be attached on the wall of the skimmer section. Let me know what you think please !

If you have any advice or think a change in something will be a bit better, let the comments fly !

Looks nice. I am assuming your going to have it custom made as I don't think there is anything on the market like this. I also have a 60 cube in the build process and am struggling to find a sump that will work so if you know where to find one like this let me know.

That looks awesome. How much would it cost to custom build one like this?

Yes ... It's gonna have to be custom made . I'm having John from advanced acrylics make it. I've heard some good things and seen his work he did for my LFS .

Not exactly sure what the cost is gonna be yet , but I know he is pretty reasonable.

I know there's probably a better way to design it but for right now that's all I can think of ... Lol but Im going to decide by tomorrow night and pull the trigger !

Let me know how much he charges you I want a similar set up but a little bigger since my tank is 30x24x19 that way I can get a bigger ATO.

I'd bag the refugium if it were me. You can still have a section for chaeto if wanted but leave more room for everything else.

A good skimmer is more beneficial than a refugium ime. I'm building a 87g rimless right now and my sump will be super simple. 20g tank with one baffle to keep the water height stable for my skimmer.

I will eventually go with a custom sump but that will be down the road when I'm ready for zeovit stuff.

I was actually just going to do chaeto . No sand or nothing , but this ill be my first Refugium. I don't have experience in that category ! So I didn't know how big the section should be if its just chaeto ...any advice on how big so its still beneficial ?

Does anyone have a recommendation on how big the chaeto section should be ?
I would mind making it small we for more room like suggested above ... But this will be my first tank with chaeto .

How big should the section be ?

Maybe 8x8 at the biggest. Just make sure there is good flow through that section.

I like your design. I would like to build an ATO in my sump as well. You don't see many people doing this from what I have seen. I would keep the refugium for sure. Possible consoder making kt more than 12 inch tall sump though. If you went a little deeper you could easily have a deep sand bed with cheato. A DSB will help grow some anerobic bacteri and reduce nitrate and phosphate levels. Also maybe consider extending the refugium from 11" to 12" to fit a nice light on top. 11" works but most lights are 12" and your Refugium light may hang over a bit into the return section.

I like this design. I have a 60 rimless Im looking to have a sump built for. I also am going to have an ATO built in. Either that or I'll have the ATO chamber above the sump and use the gravity/float valve method.

I have a sump(29 x 30) made by John and it is pretty sweet. Don't forget to account for the thickness of the acrylic as that took alittle bit away from the inside dimensions.
As far as fuge volume, there is a ratio to tank/fuge that makes a fuge beneficial but I don't have that number rite now.
