On behalf of the RC Staff, we would like to thank Palting for being the April Reefer of the Month. Here is what he had to say:

First, thank you to RC. I've learned so much about reef keeping from RC that I believe I would not have been able to stay in the hobby beyond 6 months. In gratitude, I try to pass on all that I've learned from RC back to anyone that asks.

I first got into saltwater almost 30 years ago. The tank had to be taken down and sold after 5 years due to a move. I came back to it about 3 years ago, and started with almost 30 year old aquarium know-how. Once I found RC, it didn't take long to figure out I was working with obsolete ideas. With new knowledge gained, the noob tank was taken down and a new larger reef tank was started. Every step, from equipment purchase to set up was guided by posts and stickies from RC. There were a few personalized modifications to the setup, some of which RC may frown upon . Regardless, the tank has been maturing and thriving for over 3 years now.

Reefing is definitely an addiction. It is a 24/7/365 garden that requires constant attention. A significant part of the joy in reefing is continuously gaining new knowledge and insight, applying these to the hobby, and the gratification of seeing a positive result. There were a few bumps on the road, but that just adds to the challenge. It wouldn't be fun if it is easy, is it? It is also a family activity, and my family are supportive and enjoy the hobby almost as much as I do. The kids have named the fish based on Roman history, researching and coming up with names like Romulus and Remus (clown pair), Pompeii (purple tang), and Theodora (naso tang). The CUC are collective called The Roman Legion.

I enjoy the hobby so much, the noob tank setup that was supposed to be sold became a FOWLR instead. This where non-reef safe fish go into.

RC is a fun forum, invaluable to getting my tank going, and I am happy to contribute and pass forward what I've learned.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Thank you RC, for the honor. Certainly, one of the fun things in this hobby is sharing. Sharing things about our tank, and sharing what we have learned. Working on the reef tank is fun, and helping other reefers out is also fun! :)

Congratulations!

One question after looking at your pictures: How do you keep the sand bed clean without bumping into and breaking off pieces of coral. I am having trouble accidentally breaking things when I navigate my tank.

Thanks

Thanks, everyone.

I just noticed the banner above my avatar. Cool beans!! Thanks, RC.

All the powerheads and return nozzles in my tank are directed downwards, IdahoCindy, so there is a lot of flow going across the substrate . I just occasionally stir the substrate with a stick. Otherwise, I leave the substrate alone. The substrate grains are medium sized, they stay in place despite the high flow with just a little wiggle here and there, and coralline actually grows on the medium grain substrate.

Thanks, all.

I didn't want to post a full tank shot, SushiGirl, lest it be confused as TOTM. And I didn't want to stand in front of the tank and have my picture taken, 'cuz my picture scares off people! I kinda look like my avatar!! :D

You may spend enough time infront of the tank that they think you are a fish. If I had a tank like your I know I would be infront of it all the time. Congratulations on your recognition from RC.

I used to fire off opinions left and right. Since I got this banner by my avatar, I've gotten a little more timid! LOL! Still, discussing things in this forum definitely adds a layer of fun to this hobby.

discussing things in this forum definitely adds a layer of fun to this hobby.

I remember a thread a month or two ago where I could see things were getting to you. It got me to start a few fun threads that Sushi got into also. These are things that make it fun IMO. I gotta come up with something else. :wavehand:
