I just bought a new war coral frag and I've heard people putting them in low light. Would it be ok if I put it in my sand bed or should a mount it on a rock. I'm looking for the best growth. What's best please?

I have a 29 gallon tank with a 2 bulb light fixture. 1 actinic blue and 1 white

I keep my war coral at the bottom in the middle in open light and it looks great. They will grow faster if they have rock to spread and encrust over, if you keep it on the sand it'll grow its own skeleton an form a baseball like shape and slowly get bigger. My advice. Stick it on a rock and let it encrust

Perfect! I appreciate it.. How fast does your war coral grow and what type of lighting do you have?

55 gallon
4x54 watt t5ho
Sg 1.024
420 ppm ca
9.2 dkh
1300 ppm mg
80 degrees

I spot feed mine a few times a week a mix of mysis shrimp and nls pellets. They're pretty dang slow growers as is. But mine is growing ok I guess. Tough to put a rate on it. Definitely not fast though. However, in my experience (which is limited), most corals grow faster the bigger they get. More light collection, more feeding tentacles, ect.

Just be careful what else is on the rock. Mine has probably grown 20x the size over less then 2 years, from a little 5 head frag to a hundred or more. It's called a war coral for a reason! They are a pretty tough coral, mine is up high in the tank, now it's taking over a rock to the point where I will have to break up the rock as it is intruding on all the other corals.

mess7777 what type if lighting are you using? My lighting is only 1 actinic 420 and 1 6,500k and im thinking i need to place mine higher with that level of lighting.

The lights I had were LED and the war coral was getting about 100-150 par. I just changed lights so not sure if it will have to be placed lower now. Due to it's crazy growth I have to move it anyway.

I would say place it in the top half of the tank with your lighting as you mention.
